i have a sugino messenger crankset. can u use a different chainring with the crank arms?
Look for a 130 BCD (bolt circle diameter) chainring, this will fit.

Don't really want to start a new thread so hopefully here is best placed (as it will give some info on chainrings, hopefully).
I've been offered a new Strong Light 48t 144pcd (Aero, said the guy) chainring for £40 so I thought I'd trawl the interweb to see whther this was a deal or not. I came up with this from Tokyo FG:
http://www.tokyofixedgear.com/productdetails.asp?productid=01157
is that a ludicrous price (£110)? as the only other place I could find something similar (50t) is here:
http://www.sjscycles.co.uk/product.asp?pf_id=19789&src=lfgss
I'm not a big fan of the look of the ring as I want a Sugino 75 but if £40 is a deal for the quality then I might take it.
So the questions really are - is £40 a good deal? are Strong Light Comps good quality? should I spend £10 to £20 more for a Sugino?

Those look very good and look like it could give the Miche Advanced a run for it's money.
-
• #82
No they look like shit, and the Miche looks a bit better... :)

They would look okay with a different chainring . That ring should be on a black chainset and still look horrible.

high on bikes is selling the Truativ Omnium cranks for around the £130 at the moment, does anyone have any track experience of them?
or any experience really.

not sure but to spend £130 why not spend a bit extra and get some 75's or campag pista's, parker are doing campag pista cranks+chainring for £170ish.

but what if the Omniums are better? Plus you would still need a BB with the Campagnolo set.
Sacrilige to suggest there could be better cranks that 75's or Campags but is that external BB thing all hype?

From a functional standpoint, I'd go external BB if the q-factor was OK.
I prefer external BB's, but really notice + love the tiny q-factor with my Campags.

Agree. I prefer the external BB too and only realised how much I like Q factor to be as narrow as possible when I foolishly liked the look of the BMX cranks and put some on my Scissor. It felt like riding a horse!
One ride and I put my road cranks back on and that was even using a narrow MTB sized BMX axle (5.25 inch)Bit of an expensive experiment but nevermind...

Forgive my ignorance since I'm only fixing my very first single speed (freewheel not fixed) bike and I do not know many things in detail. I presume that something is different but I don't know what.
I'm 6 1" tall and my inseam is 35". I use 175mm crank arms on my mtb and my road bike. I'm trying to find a track crank set with the same length, but it is very rear. The majority of the track crank arms are 165-170 mm and even much taller riders than me use them.
Should I use a shorter length or stick with 175 mm? What do I loose/earn?Thank's in advance for any useful answer.

People go for shorter cranks on a fixed, for a number of reasons. They are easier to spin at high cadence, reduce the amount of toe overlap with the front wheel, and reduce the chance of pedal strike while cornering. Having said that, I've heard of many a tall person using 175s, especially at your height. I was'nt aware they were rare.

I want to give external bb a shot, I already have a set of Campag record pistas on another bike.
Its very easy to say well its only another £30 everywhere on a bike and end up spending £2k on something that was meant to be cheap.
@vmar the reason that track bikes have sorter crankset is to avoid pedal strike as you cannot set the cranks when to corner on a track bike like you can with a freewheel. so if you are intending to stay single speed thn go for the crank lenth you are used to but if you are thinking of going fixed then go for the shorter cranks.

Thank's for the info Smallfurry and Ed.
I'm going single, not fixed and also the frame I use is for 27" wheels with generous clearance, so toe overlap is not an issue. Therefore I'll stick with 175mm cranks. I think the more torque is always useful. -

Ed - Go for the Omniums. Build quality is good and functionally they're light years ahead of a traditional square taper set.
Do they have them in the black or the silver for £130?
-
• #95
grey i think, search on flea bay, they had 10 sets or so.
-
• #96
oh and have bought quite a bit from High on Bikes before and service and delivery speed has been top notch...
-
• #97
Seem to remember the Omniums can run close to the chainstay on some frames (by close to I mean hit !)
Worth searching that out maybe... -

Are the Token Alloy Track Cranksets any good, should they be added to the list?
I really want a an all silver crankset and was looking at the £70 mark so thought these ideal
http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?PartnerID=79&ModelID=47479
but now know that they are old stock and no longer come with a silver chainring.
Can anyone suggest a good all silver crankset for £90 or less (preferably less), was looking at the Stronglight 2000 from Spa cycles?

"The second new release is a cold forged fluted track crank (144bcd) inspired by the Campy Strada. This project originally started back in 2007 as an idea for a 110bcd crank, but got shelved for a while. We eventually decided to resurrect the idea last year as a track crank."
Distributor Windwave has said that the new vintage-style, single speed Gimondi chainset from components manufacturer FSA will be available in the UK from May at a price of £79.95.
