I don't think I want to work this out- I started thinking about it just in terms of clothing:
Helmet £110
Wow - which lid costs that much?

• #106
I want Fiddy to put an actual figure on his spending :)
My mate likes track days and will spend £500 just on tyres for a weekend of driving cars round in circles at speed. Add on to that cost of the car, travel, accommodation and even petrol and you'll see that cycling is a relatively cheap hobby (at least that's what I tell myself each time I walk up to the till).

I've spent lots. I don't like to keep track, but I esentially sold a bike I bought through cycle to work scheme which funded my fixed bike.

about 700 quid. bought quite a lot of tools this year.

Fine. I'll buy the £200 one :P
I work long hours. I earn cash money.
There's guys in the city getting bonuses (as in just the bonus, not their actual fucking wage)
also bear in mind that the big bonus brigade have relatively small salaries ( certainly smaller than their bonus) as they are 'bonus-driven', as they say.

that must be the fourth or fifth time i've heard you say that!
that sounds like a seriously expensive hobby, though.

bikes are a lot cheaper!
If I think about what I have spent on other thing, then my bike spend seems to pale into insignificance.
Probably about £1500 (I could be deluding myself here) by the time I have bought and sold a few bits. Although I have only paid the deposit on the new frame, so that comes out of 2009 spend.
Edit - Sadly it appears I was deluding myself, a few sums and I am probably about £2500-£3000
Although my FECK index is good at 0.03

Oh and I'm going to Japan in the new year so I'm going to start 2009 off with a new frame.
Ooooh...what you buying??
Got my bike through the CycleScheme so compared to a yearly travel card I'm doing alright. But then there's the clothing, locks, lights, tyres...so I'm probably about breaking even. I'm piss poor at saving/gradually paying off the overdraft so it looks like it's CycleScheme for 2009 unless I somehow get my $hit together. Unlikely though.

I've only spent about £300 but if I didn't own a classic car I could have easily spent the £3000 I spent on my car on bike stuff.

Interesting........ so at the extremes.......
if you earn £5/hr you rode for 20,000 hrs this year...
or
if you rode an hr/day you get paid £273/hr.......can I borrow £20??
:-) -

Same as that. I've done about £1500ish on bikes this year and probably spent another £2K on stuff for my Capri.

far far far too much, new hubs, cranks headset and frame has come to £1175 - and thats just for the new build, in total its bloody loads!
-
• #124
On reflection I'm starting to regret choosing bikes over crack- I think as a habit it would have proved to be cheaper.
-
• #125
true that!
According to CyclingWeekly the average commuter saves around £32.50 a week (if memory serves, which it never bloody does).
32.50 x 52 = £1690
This puts me just in the black, so I'm not feeding my habit. My habit is feeding me :)
