My doc told me to pre-empt the moments when craving is bound to happen... devolop ways to deal with them by being prepared.
I have chewed gum which I find a little disgusting. Tried taking a few deep breaths when cravings have happened, I like the having a drink of water method, I will try this too, cheers for that one Rosmal.
Today is my 14th day without fags.

I jacked the fags in about 5 years ago (ish)
First I broke my habits.
I used to smoke before work, 10 am, 2 at lunch, 3pm then all evening.
I stopped the am fags, only having 1 at lunch, 1 after work and 1 in the evening
(This took a few weeks to ween off the usual ones)
I kept this 3 (or so) fags a day up for a few weeks ( I was rationing a load of duty frees I had)
When I run out I stopped smoking.
I did smoke the odd joint for a few months after.
Then went 3 yrs or so without smoking.
Then my dad died and I had a few snouts when I found out, and at the funeral.
Since then I have smoked off and on.
I only smoke menthols and I only smoke them until I feel the need to smoke, then I stop for 6 weeks.
I have the odd cigar as well, but I don't count them.
My problem is I enjoy smoking. -

I quited over a year a go after 3 years of smoking, when I ended up in the hospital after dislocating my hip in a snowboard accident. Didn't have any problems quiting at all, which was really nice ofcourse, but I did it before without having any problems, so no real surprise there.
Then after a few months I started having the occasional sigaret at parties and was really fine with that. Fags in the drawer and not touching/thinking during the weeks.
Now about 2/3 weeks ago I picked up fulltime smoking again and I still don't really know how it had come to that.
Yesterday I decided to quit again, but I'm having a pretty hard time. Didn't really see that coming after earlier 'tries' have been way easier./dont know why i had to write this down

Oh Jose. You were/are dead skinny anyway, don't beat yourself up about it.
Good to hear peoples' tales of woe/joy about experiencing trying to give up. And also about the possibilities of relapsing, say during a stressful time such as when in mourning.
Thanks all.
FWIW I haven't used any nicotine stuff and no weaning. I just stopped. I threw every single rizla pack and any old crappy bits of tobacco dust hiding away in the bin.
I have been finding it remarkably OK most of the time. I haven't been to the pub yet though.

Ive heard acupuncture works really well, someone I know tried it in their late 50's after a lifetime of smoking and a heart attack and hasn't gone back since...

You sure it wasn't mortal fucking FEAR which made them quit, rather than a few ickle needles?
Props to everyone who's off the fags, or at least trying. I did 12 weeks at the start of the year, slipped back, and today is the first day of the rest of my life (again). NRT is delaying the inevitable. Get shot of the addiction (a few days) then work on the habitual. Maybe I'm wrong though...

I've just (Friday actually - 4days, 7hours and 3min ago according to the app) gone cold turkey. Haven't had a single fag. Even with a night at the Hootananny on Saturday. The hardest part of it I find is the habit breaking. Like nipping out during work, on the way to the shops etc. Not sure I'm getting any cravings. Time will tell I suppose

Good call... Horatio (and Gabes) tripped me up last time... And you tripped yourself up, remember threatening to buy your own fags unless I gave you one outside the John Snow last year? Tsk, tsk, tsk... ;]
Thats how I ended up stopping. I tend to find its the first day or two thats really bad, and after that a psychological barrier has been got over. Had a heavy weekend which lead to me coming down with the lurgy and didn't leave bed for a day or two, or the hosue to get tobacco for a week..
