  • You sure this actually happened? Been hearing this bandied around all day.

Quoted from a Guardian report. See no reason for the journalist to make it up considering he's been reporting on the events over the last few days.

  • This is incredible footage, for the worst reasons. Starts right at my st...

that's my regular route between flats. I hope fitz's is ok! :(

  • It was reported by the Guardian journalist who's been reporting from hot spots since everything kicked off. Will try and find the link.

    Not my alias FYI

this is a link to sangat tv. they are right in the thick of it in the midlands.

  • .

  • The chap Sky have live in Manchester reminds me of the 90s TV show Nightshift. Colin Bennett used to saunter around late night cities with a hand held camera.

  • Dudes outside (peaceful observers it seems) were arguing re "their just defending their stores" and "he was standing on his throat". You'd need to be brave/stupid to tkae on someone at a Dalston kebab shop though - you seen those kebab broadswords they have? Fahhhhhhhhhk

  • Here's the twittery thingy: http://twitter.com/#!/paullewis

  • jv - how does that make any difference to the fact that you defended their actions? you appalling human being.

No need. Judging by your posts today, I reckon you'll count as a reputable source :)

  • Yes as of the last 20 minutes lots of tweets about hella sirens in Dalston.

  • Here's the twittery thingy: http://twitter.com/#!/paullewis

    cheers.

  • Also, what the fuck is with the reluctance here to use baton rounds / plastic bullets on rioters?
    Or even the water cannon?
    On the "mainland" ?
Because "it isnt a British way of policing" or something like that.. are you fucking serious?

Not that I favour any sort of armed policing whatsoever, but the RUC - last time I checked they were still a police force under the remit of the Queen - seemed to never have any problems whatsoever opening up on republicans in the north of Ireland with the plastic bullets at the slightest drop of a hat.
    Double standards bullshit.
Perfectly alright for the cops to use them in northern Ireland but totally unacceptable to use them on British citizens.

  • many of the neighbourhood Turks and Kurds don't drink either, they just blast loud tunes and inhale Redbull like its air. Their always primed to go off. More sirens

  • Seems like it may have been short lived.

"And peace has descended back in Dalston. Crazy fast response by police, they were not messing about."

  • This is the Paul Lewis retraction that appeared in the Guardian: 9.41pm:

"Paul Lewis has sent in an update from Enfield:

I think it is important to dampen down some of the speculation circulating about our reports and tweets on vigilantes in Enfield.

It is always a tough balance to get the tone right, and it is important to stress, again, there is no evidence of racial disturbance here.

My colleague Mustafa Khalili and I reported what we saw and it was an incident that left us both shaken. We described it as a minor skirmish.

That's what it is was. It seemed pertinent to mention what some of the men were saying, as it seemed different to anything we've seen in the last four days, but some
seem to be taking that out of context. There were no racist chants."

peace never really descends on Dalston, sirens are usual. Its just convoys of sirens all night long that are unusual.

  • This thread has gained nearly eighty pages in a day. That's got to be some sort of record.

  • @ Catfood, as Hugh Orde says, those are tactics used in Belfast when officers were under live fire, petrol bombs etc. He says not justified here because this isn't (yet, thankfully) quite the same level of insurgency. Baton rounds certainly are bloody serious and I think people have been killed with them.

I'm not sure I agree with him personally, but just trying to answer your question.

Cheers for that. I'm not entirely sure what to make of it though. "What we said is what we saw. It happened. We'll call it a minor skirmish."
