It's sick in the fact that it's forced but population growth needs to be contained. The only diffrence is that because China is a one party state it can do something about it even though it goes about it in a brutal way, while the rest of the world just seems to say it's expectable to have large families and increase the population instead of encouraging small families and population stabilization / decrease. Hence any type of attempt at population control anywhere else draws comparisons with China and their authoritarian methods.

Then there is the influence of religion, poverty, inequality and mortality rates; if your child has a very high chance of dying before it is five you are more likely to have several children; a grotesque bet on survival that the poorest of the poor have to make.

Actually in retrospect, I think its acceptable to use a few forms of contraception. For example, I think its ok to pull out at the last minute. Obviously this is fine as long as you dont help it along at all as wanking is out too.

Of course all this is true. I never said what was done was right just that there is a problem and they have their solution.

The education point is particularly true but I a problem is I don't think even in supposedly first world countries the problem of population is not properly discussed.

If you are richer then you can have as many kids as you want. if you are poor and need the children to help add to houseyhole income/pension then you cannot. also if you are poor and undeccated and you accidneally have more children than permitted then you are hit with a tax

But the poor and uneducated are multiplying as it bumps them up the housing list and gets them extra benefits.
