  • Me being unnecessarily snarky about the He For She campaign. I think these things by necessity must speak the language of the unconverted to have any effect, so my thoughts on the media packaging are pretty irrelevant.

  • thanks heavens for other people getting offended so you don't have to.

Lots of white people expressing an opinion on it in that article. Phew, what a relief! For a minute I was worried that white, middle-class people would be shut out from the whole discussion!

  • A posho like Cameron is only really worried about what an even posher person might think of him. Such a relief to know he'll be invited back to the Queen's next garden party or whatever.
Who cares what the plebs might think of the whole situation.

I doubt your views would be irrelevant. The #sheforhe noise gives some hope that the strike-through will come to their statement. I'm genuinely shocked, and won't hit the button until the wording is made more inclusive. It seems to be in contrast to what she said in her UN speech.

  • Quote fail.

Except that Sara Myers, who led the protest, and the petition, was black. (Having not seen the exhibition, I have no opinion on it.)

  • Had Ms Myers seen it?
    #ihaventseeniteither

  • No idea. The show might have had a different reaction if the artist was black, though. I get the impression it was pretty near the knuckle.

  • Thanks to Ms Whitehou... er Myers, no one will see it.

  • Yes that's a shame. I think she was worried, rightly or wrongly, that there still exist racist elements of society who would revel in the imagery. Perhaps she had encountered genuine racism and this heightened her sensitivity on the issue.

  • I'm pretty relieved I'm now not able to make my own mind up on the matter...

    Thanks Obama...

  • i don't really care what her reasons are. the second you set yourself up as a censorious, tin pot dictator who threatens violence and intimidation, your justifications for your outrage are rendered moot.

  • I agree I would rather the show had been allowed to run. I'm saying I can understand the desire to shut it down. The artist clearly intended to shock, and he has. In a way, the show was a social experiment about how far boundaries can be pushed in terms of racial issues, and the reactions are interesting in themselves.

  • The actors:

"We find this piece to be a powerful tool in the fight against racism. Individually, we chose to do this piece because art impacts people on a deeper emotional level that can spark change.

"The exhibit does not allow for any member of the audience – white, black or otherwise – to disassociate themselves from a system that contains racism within it. We are proud to be black performers in this piece; to represent our history, our present and ourselves by playing the various characters taken from the record books."

    Sara Myers:

"If Brett Bailey is trying to make a point about slavery this is not the way to do it. The irony gets lost and it's not long before the people behind the cage begin to feel like animals trapped in a zoo. One of the actors in his piece said: 'How do you know we are not entertaining people the same way the human zoos did?'"

Duh thats the point. It's not supposed to ironic. Irony is impotency. It's supposed to piss you off, to upset you, to make you consider yourself.

  • i suspect that a lot of the animosity towards Mr Bailey stems from the fact that he is a white south african.

    i cannot prove this.

  • I just got into an argument with her on facebook why am i this person

  • some promotion happening today for 'clippet news', looks fresh, but will stick with this thread for now.. :-)

  • Woudn't try that, you might accidentally win.

  • It is supposed to piss you off, agreed. And some people got so pissed off they shut the show down. And now nobody can see the show, and nobody can get pissed off by it. So the show has defeated itself. I think that is ironic. It's like rain on your wedding day.

  • Always money available for war. Sigh.

  • It's like rain on your wedding day.

Is this your catchphrase for the day?!

  • Ironically, it's raining today and it his wedding day.
