  • but it wasn't, it was drugs, he got caught, couldn't do the bird so he grassed
    fail thread

  • ...and if he was responsible for 85% of the coke getting into the US over a couple of decades, he's been involved in the deaths of tens of thousands of central and south Americans and stunting the economic development of those countries.

But hey, drugs and crazy Latin bloodbaths are way cool, so he's a hero to cretins.

  • In any other line of business he'd have been hailed as a logistics genius.

That was George H.W. Bush who helped set up the cartels as CIA chief and brought it in (White) house as Vice President. It was, however, not very inventive as the US government entered into the drug biz many years earlier, especially during the Viet Nam war where building up the herioin market in the US was part of effort to build bridges with the South East Asian tribal leaders--- development assistence was helping them become drug lords. It seems that over the past 50 years one could map the popularity of specific drugs with US geo-politics... Not able to fight an Opium War to keep the supply going to ruin other countries they fought to create a home market to generate funds to buy other countries...

  • And the contra/ ricky "freeway" ross scandal

    "Iran-Contra involvement
Main article: CIA and Contras cocaine trafficking in the US

Ross's capture was facilitated by his career-long dealer Oscar Danilo Blandón, who "set up" Ross. Blandón had close ties with the Contras, and had met with Contra leader Enrique Bermúdez on several occasions. Blandón was the link between the CIA and Contras during the Iran-Contra affair. Gary Webb interviewed Ross several times before breaking the story in 1996. Ross claims that the reason he was unfairly tried initially was because of his involvement in the scandal. Blandón received a 24-month sentence for his drug trafficking charges, and following his release, was hired by the Drug Enforcement Administration where he was salaried at US$42,000. Blandón was not a U.S. citizen/national, and is the only known foreigner not to be deported following conviction on drug trafficking charges in U.S. history.[citation needed] The INS was ordered to grant Blandón a green card, despite the criminal convictions, to allow him to work for the DEA. The DEA has claimed they no longer employ Blandón, and his whereabouts are unknown.[13]"

I didn't say he was a hero and neither did I condone his choice of product.

If there was no demand there'd be no supply. He wasn't pushing anyone to buy anything.

  • Fuck black cabs. They even manage the seemingly impossible task of making TfL seem cheap. Lived in London for 10 years and have never paid for one out of my own pocket.

You're going to hate them even more tomorrow when they plan to protest and cause gridlock in the roads around Trafalgar Square:

    AVOID, people, AVOID!

  • ^ especially if you've got any anti-taxi ink on you :/

  • taxi's do critical mass
    how ironic

  • Shit, how will I get from a to b? I know, I'll give Uber a try.

  • Shame Addi Lee are not striking too. With them all kettled up in one place the roads would feel a lot less edgy for a while.

  • The cab drivers wouldn't strike if Addison Lee did.

  • Should make my ride home quicker. Do it every day cabbies.

    Opens Addison Lee account.

  • because 1000s of passengerless black cabs snarling up the roads is different to every other day of the week how exactly?

And just a minute ago I got an email from Uber saying this.

"Which is why today, on top of our existing options of uberX, EXEC and LUX cars in London, we're opening up the Uber platform to London's Black Cabs, bringing one more safe and reliable option to London riders, in the form of UberTAXI."

lots of beeping round central london today
    quite fun

flotilla of drivers doing the knowledge joined in on their scooters, cue more beeping

  • Uber app is great, I was looking at it the other week.
This publicity is exactly what they want. Every city it has launched in the same thing has happened and their exposure has gone through the roof. I bet almost no one had heard of it before today.

Fuck the cabbies. You can't stand in the way of technology and progress. Cut your fares accordingly or die a painful death

  • Prawn industry slavery

Tempted to create a thread for this but for now...

While I was supposed to be working today I read the Guardian's extensive report on the shocking and barbaric things that appear to be happening within the prawn supply chain in south east Asia (particularly Thailand), in order to provide supermarkets globally (and even our chicken farms) with fishmeal/prawns.

The brutal accounts of boats packed with migrant workers who are tricked, enslaved, starved, tortured, kept at sea for years and even killed, reads like something out of a medieval history book.

If you haven't already seen this: http://www.theguardian.com/global-development/2014/jun/10/supermarket-prawns-thailand-produced-slave-labour

Awesome! They were still going strong at 4.30pm. Finding it hard to feel any sympathy for them, I must say.
