Taxis, specifically black cabs, are not a public service utility, by any stretch of the imagination.
They are a governmentally protected monopoly.

While taxis are our traditional fiend I do agree with the position of the drivers. Taxis are part of the public transit system and are regulated. Uber and others undermine the foundation of that pillar by exploiting "loopholes" in the regulation. This can lead to not just a collapse of the traditional pillar but also lead to wild uncontrolled (and unregulated) taxi-like services exploting the financial benefits (profit) without the obligations--- and without legal limits on their numbers. Its a bit like letting loose large numbers of hyenas to combat a few city rats.
What are the benefits of artificially limiting the number of taxi cabs? Other than higher prices for consumers, and someone gets to cream all the licence fees. It's a monopoly.

A taxi driver was behind me on a cycle/bus lane on Tuesday, revving and doing his best to push me into the kerb... Eventually he got past, narrowly missing my bars, only to join the queue of traffic at a red light about 20m up the road... I stopped for a quick chat...
Me: "Mate, what's that all about, what did you just accomplish by overtaking me so dangerously?"
DeathCab: "I've got a fare, I'm in a hurry."
Me: stunned silenceThey can all fuck off, tax dodging plumber cunts on wheels is all they are...

two lanes of (empty) victoria embankment. Me in primary in left hand lane. cab honks then punishment passes, on an empty road. lovely.
But! (probably been said) The whole traffic-brought-to-a-standstill London yesterday was awesome. All the little rat runs around where I was had been sealed off by idle cabbies at the ends, so everything was effectively pedestrianised, and much better for it.

Reads a bit like an argument for central planning vs the free market economy.

#csbI'd rep you for the plumber bit but the stunned silence bit lets it down. Wanted proper rant ending in fisticuffs and a night in jail for you both.

Reads a bit like an argument for central planning vs the free market economy.
In the case of public utilities "free market" has consistently shown itself to be neither "free" nor "efficient". I refer the reader to the experience of the US with, at first, the electric power holding cartels, then the period after passing the Federal Power Act of 1935 up through the 1970s when the tide started to turn towards deregulation. Before "deregulation" the electric power industry did quite well in the US. Public utilities were considered "gold standard" and the price for electricity saw declines in response to improvements in technolgy and efficiency. The "free market" mindset gone wild eventually brought the Americans the Energy Policy Act which opened access to the networks to non utilities. This has led not just to a shift in the ownership of electricity generation to investor owned but also to rises in prices and a decline in standards. Y2K fears got quickly replaced by brown and black outs. In California electricity prices rose over 1/3 since 2006. Should natural gas prices start to rise--- currently at record low prices in the US--- prices will literally skyrocket!

What some thick people do not seem to realise is that fewer laws can lead to reduced choice as the premium product is competed out of existence. This benefits no-one. Not the people who wish to buy the premium product. Not the producers of the premium product. Not the public who do not use the premium product.
If it is premium people will pay a premium and the black cabs will be fine but why cut out a cheaper and in some cases more effective option just to keep the premium option available?

is jeez edwardz?
To be fair to EdwardZ, he doesn't try to elaborate an argument that is retrofitted by knowledge gained by having a quick look at wikipedia whilst mid-sentence as Jiiz does. That is of course not to say that it doesn't have the same stupefying effect on its intended audience.

holy shit, you just made me realise we need an app that lets us specify our need for chicken and it will show us the best local chicken shops and then deliver said chicken to our current location for a specified price.
we can call it 'free range chikun' (all the best companies misspell words in their name).
let's kickstarter this bitch.

Isn't there an app which compares the prices of chicken and the prices hummus in each area?
I think hummus is always more expensive. -

How do you put someone on ignore? Been on the forum since 2007 and none of the bellends who have come and gone (or in fact stayed) have been bad enough for me to need the ignore function- Jeez on the other hand is unbelievably tiresome and I need him out of my online life.
