They may have a lot of cash, but the Chinese per capita GDP is just above Bosnia, and just below Jamaica. The border thing is clearly for military applications, but some might say they would be better off spending the money on helping the 35% of their population living on less than $2/day.

They are loaded. Huge stockpiles of western currency and debt, coupled with minimal spending on social security/public sector pensions etc. According to this, 27.8% of our public spending is on social protection, I can't imagine China's is even a tenth of that. Defence is around 4%. Imagine what you could build if you allocated even half of that social spending over into defence.

[Not real edit] Chinese social spending in 2009 was 293B Yuan, which is £29B. The latest figures for the UK are £196B (from the link above). This is one of the reasons China are going to be the dominant force in the future, they simply don't need to raise as much money from their people and businesses, as their expenditure is so much lower (20% of GDP compared to 50% in UK). The fact that this keeps so many in crushing poverty is not an issue for the ruling/owning class. Probably a benefit, in fact.

  • The superpowers are bored.

Its a fucking massive sudoku board.

Satellite based lasers from the big players will start filling in the blanks, as soon as the clue numbers are in place. The winner gets tibet.

  • Wasn't sure where to put this... it's hardly a funny video and is equally win/fail depending on whether you are interested int the science behind the animation or it's potential implications. There isn't a coherent climate/environment thread that I could find, and in the light of the upcoming COP 17 meeting in Durban, I figured (hoped) that climate issues might see a surge in interest from the news media.

So... here is an interesting animation showing the history of atmospheric CO2 levels (i think it's best viewed fullscreen so that the legend is legible) :

and then found this even more cheerful analysis of US spending patterns (from earlier this year but still!)

  • The numbers are horrific: 32,955 killed, nearly 3m injured between 2000 and 2010. This is 11 years of deaths and injuries on Britain's roads.

Just looked up my local village and saw the symbol for my friend, took a few seconds to hit me. Very surprised how many fatal accidents there is, driving is far more dangerous than anyone thinks.

  • Cannot believe the number of pedestrians that appear to have been killed on motorways, I am not trying to make light of an upsetting subject, but peds and motorways = darwinism at work

Hm. I am more struck (no pun intended) by how many pedestrian fatals there are in Inner London (Zone 1), where average veh speeds are around 10 km/h.

  • ^ The ped fatalities in the centre of town appear to be mostly on arterial roads, there is no indication of time but I would imagine that most of them occur late night early morning when there is less traffic and therefore the speed of vehicles on those roads would be greater. Besides 1+ ton of metal moving at 10 KM/H will still strike a pedestrian with a significant force.

Back when I rode motorbikes, me and a mate were out one night and were on the M62, we then went to join the M60, just as we joined where the carriageway is about 5 lanes wide, a bloke ran across the carriageway wheeling his push bike. My mate who was doing about 80, hit the pushbike and went flying. Got away with a broken leg, as did the pedestrian. They were in opposite beds in the hospital ward too, which mafde for a fraught atmosphere.

Doubt it. The ped casualties probably mirror the cyclists', ie are caused overwhelmingly by large vehicles (buses & lorries), and occur in the morning rush hour.
