  • earplugs man. do it. they sell em in reception of all the pools i've been to. prevention is nine tenths of the law... or something. i used to quite like wearing plugs, it makes pool swimming a lot more serene. i only stopped cos i couldn't hear the coach at club sessions.

i always wear a cap and noseclip though. resisted the noseclip on aesthetic grounds for a while but was suffering horribly with chrlorine irritation in the sinuses. small price to pay considering unless you're a 50 hour a week pro everyone looks like a dick in speedos and goggles anyway.

only takes a session or two to get used to mouthbreathing out and you're sorted.

  • i tried earplugs but they either bunged my ears up more than before or fell out half way through, messing with my balance. Same as when I tried to run with a blocked ear, didn't mind but it was a bit odd

  • that's weird. swim with your fingers in your ears?

honestly man, if that's bad, i'd persevere till you get used to 'em. try a couple of different types.

  • dammit! i just paid £30 for pair of £14 goggles.

wanted some new tyr tracers (my favourite of all the gogs i've tried over the years) but in clear. seems like they're only available in the states so i bought some of ebay for $13. a bargain at £8.

hit "commit to buy" then realised only shipping options were $31 and $48. *facepalm$44 (£30) goggles. great.

still, i've probably spent more than that trying other things that don't work for me over the last few months. at least i know these things are leak free, comfortable, scratch resistant and last about a year.

think i'll leave the order in.

Oh dear. I bought some Lilac femme tracers the other week, they are ok, but they seem to leave huge bags under my eyes... I look like a morlock getting out of the pool....

Have you tried the silicone ones ? Bioears ?

  • nope, might give em a go

  • Eldest's school teacher was on strike today, so spent the day at Hampton open air pool.
Did 4k, plus lots of playing and going on the erhmmm kids slide. :)

I have burnt, my back, arms, shoulders and back of legs though. :(

I have a big X across my back now, not sure a half naked photo is such a good idea, but it really is red and white !

  • Sore 3k this morning at 7am. The warm pool didnt help !

  • 12k this week at Penzance pool.
Watched a group of about 15 ? Swimmers swim out and around st michaels mount this afternoon.
Looked a tad choppy, too cold for me yet ! Got a few pics...

  • I was swimming down Folkestone last week, still 8 degrees, really hard to get your face in and keep it in. Guess it isn't too much different down there. How far was the swim round the Mount?

  • I dont know what the temp was, but more than 8c !

I think its around 1 mile or so, the first swimmer out was between 30-40 minutes and the last over 50 minutes. Quite a bit of chop on the far side of the mount apparently. A few came back before.

  • Is there anyone that can recommend adult swimming tuition? It's for a complete novice who is not comfortable in waist high water.

Your local authority / local pools should have sessions suitable as it's all part of push for increased adult activity / reduced obesity etc etc. Ask around, they won't be free but cheaper than one to one lessons.

In other news, I'm going swimming in a bit, can't wait.

  • My 2 local leisure centres both have a contract with swimming nature who are unaffordable for me.
I'm also looking to improve my technique, i'm fine for short sprints but can't crawl for any serious length of time. I've been swimming 4 times a week for the last month or so, to recover from an ankle injury sustained earlier. Whilst I really enjoy the workout I get backaches every time I swim.

Is a group of adults tuition lesson too expensive aswell ?
I really would suggest a qualified asa teacher. Like rhb mentioned, your local swimming pool ?

I wonder how much work i could get off this site if i qualified ?
Ive been thinking about it for a year or so now.

  • I'd be fine with group lessons at a lido or leisure centre.
The beginners classes are for mrs jaw and through the leisure centre she'd be looking at least to spend £350 which to us is quite a lot.

  • ^ cheaper to get train to Manchester, hotel, and go to the Easter beginners programme at Moss Side leisure centre! Look around, there'll be something cheaper somewhere. Try asking your council Sports Development dept for starters.

Assuming you are in the London area, have you looked at swim london school courses ? They do adult courses.

You can pay by direct debit, which starts around £20 a month. They are very busy and lots of adults and children use the swim london school.

heres the link; search for your borough, pool etc, put in the age 16+, which will bring up all the adult courses. :)

Let us know how you both get on ! and I think im gonna book myself onto an asa level 1 and 2 asap ! Then i can offer some free lessons.

  • Me too.

I'm not even going to do a structured session. I'm just going to plow up and down and concentrate on my now awesome* technique.

    • Awesome, in that it is technically a million miles better than it was a month ago. But not awesome in that I am having to engage and train entirely new muscles.

So what is it that you learnt to concerntrate on ?

  • Reach, driven by my core, not crossing the centre line, catch & pull, not dropping my arms early, body roll and body position.

The one thing that I'm always getting wrong at the moment too is lifting my left arm out of the water too early, and not completing the stroke.

And swimming used to be easy.

see, i think i've got all of these covered buti don't seem to be getting significantly quicker.

actually, i'm pretty sure my main problems are inconsistant/insifficient body roll and a tendancy to over glide.

  • that and being unfit.

  • OMG ! I want all of these costumes ! Check it out !

  • After 1.5 weeks of either pools being shut, being stuck miles from anywhere or sick- I had the pool to myself for the worst 2k I've ever done.
Major stitch. Eurgh. Still arms felt fine.

  • 7.5k over the weekend.

There were a couple of sickeningly fast ladies in the pool on saturday, and were generally just playing ! I think one of them could have been Vanessa Raw.... and if it was, it makes me feel alot better about not being any where near keeping up !

In other news, I have been talking with the other half about buying a kayak, so he can escort me on more OW swims.
So.... late last night he bid on a rather old looking canoe of which he won, and now we have to somehow collect it from Bedfordshire on a car with no roof rack !

I'll see the funny side one day..................
