Running........ in a wetsuit ? My thats gonna get steamy !

  • Well if the sea temp is above 12c by race day then I can do it in my trisuit which would be far more agreeable!

  • I've done some training with the marines before (although not in a wetsuit) so this should be fine!

  • I dont think the wetsuit is necessarily needed.... if youre running mostly, you'll warm up quickly.... sounds nuts though ! :)

  • Yeah that was what I was thinking, just checked and the average sea temp is already 11.7 in Plymouth so should be fine! But yeah that's what I thought :)

  • In other news; I have just booked myself on to a asa/ukcc Level 1 teaching Aquatics ! for June :)

  • So- I've had a mediocre week, just been busy and sick.
Feel great atm, will sort my training out tomorrow for the 5k...

I just finished Roger Deakin's Waterlog, and I'm desperate to get out to some open water, I miss the first 3 seconds of sheer panic, followed by the calm acceptance of your body to the cold, and the reassuring first pull of your arms through the crisp waters.

Currently watching that Wild Swimming program, which was based on the book apparently.

  • Must get hold of that Waterlog book. Looks great. Must get out in open water more often.
Got to 50 mins of pretty consistent freestyle on Tuesday before overcrowding forced me out. Going to try and get an hour in tonight. Less than two weeks till Swimathon!

Have we had any discussion about the Olympic pool yet? i got into an argument with my wife (ha, still not used to saying that) the other day over it.

My point: Britain is pretty decent at swimming and has a chance of winning medals in 2012, further raising the already incresing profile of and participation in the sport and that generally being a good thing for kids, the future of the sport and all that follows from that. I think it's a fucking crime that there are no Olympic pools in or even near London. There are only 7 in the entire country and one in the south. Portsmouth I think? Swimming, like cycling is perceived as minority (as is anything not football pretty much) interest in this country and is woefully underfunded. And here's a great opportunity to have a world class venue and training facility in London at no extra cost. They MUST keep the Olympic pool as a full and useable Olympic pool.

Her Point: The people who live in the area want wave machine, baby pool and flumes not 50 metres of 10 lanes.

My Point: it's already built - keep it! build or refurbish another little pool nearby if that's what the local people really want/need but I’d hazard a guess that there are enough leisure pools available to fulfil that need. What there is a massive lack of, is facilities to encourage and develop athletes.

Her point. Shut up. You can train in any pool and if you get good enough that you need "proper" facilities - you go to Manchester or Loughborough on a sports scholarship.

My point: No YOU shut up.

Can anyone resolve this for us? Does anyone know what's happening to it? I started the conversation after remembering hearing an MP on the radio a couple of years ago placating angry flume-hungry residents by claiming they'd add wave machines, a shallow and flumes after the Olympics. Nooooooo

  • No not many olympic size pools, but a few more LC pools, being, the closest to London, are Crystal palace, Hillingdon, ealing.... guildford.... crawley ...

I cant see them changing the aquatics centre to flumes and wave machines, infact was she winding you up a little bit ???? :)

I would have thought that the Aquatics centre will take over the role of crystal palace ?

  • Crystal Palace is great.. I thought it was classed as an Olympic pool but apparently not, maybe because it only has eight lanes. £2.55 off peak. Only four other people there this morning. Bliss.

  • I reckon it will stay as I have heard from others in my swimming club that there is already an email address you can send a request for your team to use the pool for training after the games... maybe be bull though.

Anyone know if any open air un-heated venues open in London ATM? Need to get acclimatised to swimming in the cold again!

  • Brockwell Lido opens tomorrow and is unheated, used to love that pool when I lived down south.

Oooo I looked at the website last friday and it said open in May ! On the webpage now it says Open today ? 19th April !..... know where I am heading this weekend..... Booyaaaa !

Bit of a trek for me but might give it a go. Is serpentine open at the moment?

  • Isnt the serpentine always open ? Or Is that for members only ?

Ok, so honestly, Is it possible to train from 5k to 8/9k and acclimatise to cold water again (with wetsuit) in 6 weeks ?

There's a 10k I sooooooo want to do. But not if im going to be at risk or unhappy on the day or waste £65.

  • Serpentine is open all year but it is members only, I believe it's something like 20.00 per season.

  • Nah it's £20 to join the club (yearly subscription) then I think you don't have to pay to swim each time- they swim from 6am to 9am every day.
I went once and said I was thinking about joining- no-one asked me to pay as I was just trying it out. They were all lovely and very welcoming- I was weirdly a bit nervous and one guy who had just finished his swim got back in with me and swam with me for a bit until I got my confidence up.
Then I was doing "lengths" and, face down, you can't see shit. So when my knee touched something slimy I screamed a bit and stood up- ony to find I'd gone way off my line, right over to the edge and was standing in about 10 inches of water. V embarrassing and I never went back :)

  • Hampstead ponds are open (single-sex only), as discussed in another thread, in fact that's the only reason I've set foot in the Swimming thread, I got a bit excited about my first dip in years. Unheated but not really sure if they're the right place for distance swimming. The mens' pool looks enormous though. £3 a session.

  • Had an absolutely shit week.
Shoulder has been absolute agony all week.
Fingers crossed for the swimathon- I'll manage it, just nowhere near the time I wanted.

  • what is it with illness a week before any event that i've trained for ! :(

  • Hey Nick-Nack, I have signed up to the Eton 10K on May 27th. I am up to 6k in the pool at a steady pace (~2 hours) and have currently done no acclimatisation. I am having a problem finding anywhere outside to swim that is suitable but am not too worried as I am wearing a suit.

I have signed up to a couple of swimathon 5kms to build that endurance but am really finding it difficult staying in the pool for longer than 2 hours.

This will be my first 10k and will be happy to finish and ecstatic to go under 3 hours.
