  • ^ that's cool. was she impressive to watch ? which pool were you at?

^^personaly I can't stand using hand paddles. cally used to use them, and fins, pretty much every session. no-one at otter seems to. they don't even bother with kick boards most of the time.

  • Off to Folkie tomorrow for a nice sea weekend. Swimming with the sun on the back will be a rare treat. Hope the water temp's gone up another notch since last month.

  • So this morning I was having a nice swim, and saw a distinctive gb cap in the next lane.
Turned out it was Rebecca Adlington.
    /csb.

    No F***ing way !! photo opportunity !!!

I would have had to hug her or something else really degrading to myself ! :D

  • Well that was a disaster. Second consecutive day Ottering. After ok warm up

    800 choice
2x200 speedplay "at 800 pace" but sprinting for first 20m of 2nd and 4th 50m.
8x50 descending first 4 and building second 4.
    Something else I forget...

Ended up in the slower of three distance lanes. Main set was 800m straight swim followed by 800 IM twice. Got lapped twice in the first 800m and moved down a lane to a slower sprint lane doing 100s. Started last and got caught by the first guy before I'd done a length because it was so crowded.

Coach asked someone to move down again... no-one volunteered so I obliged but realised I was too quick for what was now the slowest of all six lanes.

Ego bruised enough and shattered after last night anyway I cited over-training tiredness and called it a day after just under an hour.

    Sucky sucky session.

Aww dooks. Weldone for going a 2nd day ! It definitely sounds like you are getting your monies worth... i wonder how much faster your 5k will be next year ! ' speedy '

  • Missed my morning swim yesterday, didnt feel like it. Been feeling tired and weak.

Have to go for a lunchtime dip today. Hope to get a swim in sat and sun outdoors in this weather !

Apparently parliament hill lido was 18c yesterday, so assuming most lidos and lakes must be creeping up now :D

Outdoor swim meet up soon ?

  • Definitley up for a thread lake swim. Was thinking last night if it weren't for, this thread I'd probably "do a 'slain" and flounce permanently.

    I was swimming!

Fair point, but nah, I still would have hugged her.......somehow.... : /

  • Three swims today in Folky, totalling 2.5 hours. 12 degrees sans wettie was lovely, given I was struggling to last an hour with wettie in 11 degrees a month ago.

Importantly, what is the point in having a Navy if they don't torpedo jet skis on sight? Dickmobiles.

Psychological ? The sun was out and you felt happier about swimming in the sea, plus you warm up quicker.

Aye ! the most dangerous thing about open water swimming is other ejits in/on motorised vehicles. ( is vehicle the right word to use ?)

I went to guildford lido with the family.... packed, but very pretty setting.

  • Ah man i'm looking foward to getting in the sea.

Sprint set at Otter last night. Tough but good fun. Managed to get there at ethe same time a my friend who's also just signed up. Much quieter on a Sunday and having plumped for the slowest lane from the off, managed to avoid the issues with getting demoted:

    400 swim
    4x100 kick
    8x50 speedplay
    4x25 @ 100%

    4x25 95%on 30sec
    100 easy
    2x50 95% on 1:30
    2x100 easy
    1x100 at race pace
    3x100 easy

    Repeat main set x3

    (4000m)

Got plenty of one-on one attention from the very good coach too. Was really feeling it my chest lasy night and am a bit jelly-limbed today

  • By the end of last night it was only me and my mate in the lane so we were getting loads of help. First bit of real attentive coaching I've had since I was a kid. Here's what he had to say about my stroke.

First thing he said was that my left arm recovery was a bit screwed up. Apparently I was twisting the hand and recovering with too straight an arm. Spent the entire next two hours thinking about a nice high left elbow and relaxed forearm and wrist. Was starting to come by the end I think.

Wasn't kicking my feet out of the water enough. And I have to watch my catch which sometimes gets a bit mistimed. Also Have to remember to not shorten my stroke when sprinting for the wall, push out the back and manage breathing a bit better so I can finish with a sprint and a good few strokes without breathing. All good stuff to think about.

Started doing 100m in around 1:21 although that dropped to a knackered and stately 1:28 by the last one.

  • What is speedplay ?

Damn. I wonder what he'd say about me................

  • Was that 4k over 2 hours ?

  • Can learn from these coaching tips thanks.
    Sea every day now.
    Admittedly boast post.

I thought you wernt by the sea ? confused....

  • Was that 4k over 2 hours ?

Sorry, hour and a half for the 4k.

Speedplay is just varying your speed in a pattern. So it might be 100% effort to 20m then easy for 30. Or easy to half way then sprint to the end.

I think last night we were doing 50m with a hard push off, dolphin kick and the first five handstrokes being as fast as possible... then relaxing into the rest of the length.

  • I see.

    and a 50m pool ?

  • I have officially forgotten how to swim.
I've lost all rhythm and consistency stroke to stroke and feel completely out of place in the water, its really depressing me, instead of being fun swimming is a pain and a chore.
    I'm not really sure why.

(sorry about the pathetic post- its the first time its been like this, ever)

  • I'm 80% its all mental, I'm mid exams, and just completely shattered mentally atm, so could be playing the major part...
But I need a good swim, soon, or apathy is sure to follow.

  • I thought you pwernt by the sea ? confused....

Poole/bournemouth very much by the sea.

  • Yeah, that's what they all say. ;)

    Lol.

  • went swimming (not for fun but for fitness) for the first time since school (I think I left in 1999). Now falling asleep at my desk... I'm wondering how long my good intensions will last.
