the way I see it, saddles come in 2 main types; convex, like Concor's and Rolls' and concave, like Romin's and Flite's. People seem to get on with one type better than the other with flat ones like the Arione and Toupe being the middle ground. It's not just the shape that's important though, it's flexibility and unique pressure points. I find the SLR sits just on the convex side and as such I don't get on with it.

I find the Standard 'Vanox' SLR* unbearable after 10 miles so I don't think you can make such a blanket statement, ultimately that this the flaw of this whole thread. Oh and I'm 5'11" 10st so size/weight is irrelevant
- Interestingly the much less padded SLR Ti is much more comfortable but not quite as good as a Romin
It's the Ti one I have, as pictured. I thought we all took for granted that suggestions made here are based on our own experiences... I was just suggesting not to overlook the SLR on the basis it looks uncomfortable, as I did, then to try it later and get on with it very well.

Someone recommend me a saddle. I find stuff like Turbo's, Rolls etc. But my problem is that I wear them out within a few months. I dont even ride a lot but I I somehow end up wearing right through the leatherette stuff they are made of till they fall apart.
Does anyone know of something much more durable?

Could you make one from the same material as your arse? It appears to be pretty tough.

Is this down to what you're wearing e.g. bulky seams or something?
Anyway, I'd try looking at something with kevlar bits, or the patent lorica that's on some selle italia stuff is really hard-wearing. You might have more luck checking out the mtb ranges.

I somehow missed some words in my sentence. I was trying to say that I only ever really get on with turbo's/rolls and similar comfort wise. I am not attached to them for looks, so willing to go modern. But just have found anything that feels right.

Maybe an XC version of the Flite? It's got a similar rounded top as those you mention.

Still struggling with the Arione I fitted to my steamroller. I went for around a 20 mile ride last night and it started getting uncomfortable after about 10. What I did notice though was that if I sat further back on the saddle it immediately felt much more comfortable. This got me thinking that I may have positioned the saddle wrong. I measured from the tip of the old saddle to the stem and replicated this measurement on the new saddle however I recall reading somewhere that the Arione is a longer saddle. I have moved it forward around 10 mm but have yet to give it a try.
Out of interest, what is the usual method for positioning a replacement saddle? -
• #662
Sort of what you've done. I usually measure nose to (some point of) bars, plus BB to top, half way along. Also replicate angle with spirit level laid along it's length.
But then you have to experiment/estimate differences based on saddle length, sag/squish, location of main sit-point, curve/profile, etc. Inevitably there will be further fettling after the initial fit.

Sounds like I'm doing it right then. Thanks for confirming.

I have 3 saddles; a selle turbomatic which is really comfortable, a fizik tundra 2 which is lightweight and really hard, but actually rides really nicely and looks great IMO, then I have a Brooks swallow ti which is going on a new project that I've nearly finished. Really excited to try it out and see what the hype is about. Can't fault the look of the swallows though, really elegant.

The only saddle I could confidently recommend is the [insert personal favourite here], including a number of variants within the [insert personal favourite here] range: I always liked the 'plain' version of the [insert personal favourite here] the most, but it's not made anymore. I still have the [insert personal favourite here], however, on my 'track bike', which has been demoted to a 'rollers bike'. I've just removed it from my road-going fixed gear bicycle, and replaced it with a newer version of the [insert personal favourite here] with a tiny bit more padding, a refined shape, and a cut-out that may or may not do anything, that I find more comfortable still, and have also been using on my road bike. Meanwhile, a 10-year-old [insert personal favourite here], but a slightly more padded version, still lives on my winter trainer/'turbo bike'. I also recently sold a TT-specific version of the [insert personal favourite here] which served its purpose well on a slightly harsher road bike I no longer have.
In conclusion, everyone in the world should use a [insert personal favourite here], or probably not.

Good point BMMF
I find all saddle reviews/recommendtaions useless.
They're just good in terms of comparing some saddles to others, like "this one is the same as that one with just more padding" -
• #671
It all depends on yer sitbone, one mans comfey sofa is another mans stick
-
• #672
No, it doesn't.
It depends on your sit bone, flexibility, weight, type of bike, riding style and position on the bike. There are probably some other factors as well. -
• #673
I sit corrected. I aggree with BBMF, its all totally subjective as we all have different preferences, riding styles and phiysiologies. one can only recommend what you personally like, or dont like. and I was being a bit flippant ;-)

Anyone knows who stocks Prologo test saddles?
I feel like trying Nago Evo... -

It's not helped by the fact that even the [insert personal favourite here] can feel a bit crap if saddle height / fore-aft / tilt are changed much beyond the centre of the ideal-fit-for-any-given-riding-context spectrum.
Having said all that, even the infamously troubled sit bones of Mr Scoble would be happy on the [insert personal favourite here] because it's fucking awesome for everybody or probably not.
