Winter gloves

  • Are the winter tights as thick as say the DHB ones? I'm not too worried about technical as I don't race these would be used mainly for commuting and the odd weekend ride (when I'm not wearing other brand bibs.)

I've got the planet X ones and whilst I think they are awesome my fingers always suffer from being frezzing, sometimes turn purple too!

  • So cycling in this morning even my planet x gloves were cold, my toes and fingers are always cold. I can warm my feet by wearing more socks + shoe covers but can never seem to warm my hands (fingers)

Googled about on line and found these ; http://www.tenn-outdoors.co.uk/sale-cold-weather-waterproof-windproof-soft-shell-cycling-glove-blackgrey-sml

Which look awesome for the money. Might also buy a pair of their bib tights. Does anyone have experiences with Tenn Outdoors?
I bought some cheap silk glove liners from eBay which solved this problem for me, if it helps.

I bought the Tenn gilet (about £12 from their ebay outlet). It was quite shit so I sent it back. Just really badly cut and the zip was low quality so fell to pieces or jammed with every use. Putting newspaper down the your front remained a safer and more effective alternative!

  • +1 for silk liners.

  • I got these today in (wait for it) XXXL:

I seem to have been underestimating the size of my hands and feet.

These, with silk liners, work. I wore them on Sunday, and not once did I feel cold.

  • I wore fingerless gloves on sunday.

  • Until my hands got cold at 2:30. Fascinating, no?

  • What were you doing?

  • I got some rather pricey Icebreaker merino liner gloves which Im pretty disappointed by.
Think I will try the silk ones.

  • Most of the time I wear a pair of DeFeet Duragloves, chuck a pair of silk liners in those and they work in pretty chilly temps.

    How come? Too thick?

I got some merino ones for snowboarding. Under cycling gloves they're just too thick and seem to create pressure points and not do much (I guess because it's a tight fit).

  • @Hugo

No the profile of the gloves is very thin. I think therein lies the problem! I had hoped that the properties of the merino would benefit me in the same way as my Endura Baa Baa base's which are great.

Reynauds has alot to do with it, although this winter has been mild compared to last years ice fest.

I did get some Marmot gaunlet's which are nice with the lower profile liners and some disposable hand warmers.

For really cold stuff any non bike specific glove works well, just not well enough for my bloodless digits!

  • Dammit, what model of Gore glove did you post upthread?

  • ^^ cheers for that.

  • Thanks Carson

  • @ Merak I, too, suffer with raynaud's so other people's 'regular' cold is my deep freeze cold. I recently bought a pair of heavy-duty non-cycling gloves which I use when the temp gets to zero and below. It's bulky but does the job.

  • I'm after a set of winter gloves as my Endura Singletrack Glove's have holes in the first and index finders. I've got to say I think they're smashing gloves and asides from the finger tips (which 99% of the time is actually more useful), I'd buy again when they wear out.

Note: these are NOT 'winter gloves'. They're good if you run hot.

...anyway. I need an interim for the cold weather. I'm not adverse to paying more for quality, but as I won't use 'winter gloves' unless it's super cold I don't think there's a real value for me.

just received my Planet X gloves and first impressions are nice and toasty, and all for a fiver!

Any update on the PX ones?

Also does anyone have any thoughts on the slightly more expensive

    ?

  • wore the Planet X ones this Sunday gone and my hands were about the warmest thing on me, having managed to leave base layer and jersey at work. Definately no problem with the cold, but no grips on the braking fingers meant uncertainty when gravity kicked it, I really couldn't get a lot on purchase on the carbon levers. They don't look like they will last many winters either, but then they are a fiver

  • They are tiny, though. Bought an XL, which fits my girlfriends medium ladies hand...

  • tell ya, the softshell ones from Aldi are just the job, dirt cheap, try and catch them next time, well worth it

  • best winter gloves ive owned are the dakine storm rider. Had em all last winter and still going this year. waterproof, windproof and breathable. not to bulky either use em on the road bike and cx bike easily.

  • What other gloves compares to Sealskinz Ultra Grip when it comes to grip in the palms?

I'd continue to use the Ultra Grip if it wasn't for the smell. It's almost impossible to give them a proper wash given the whole waterproof thing.

These gloves turned up. I'm well impressed for the money. Nice and toasty but you can still move your hands around, which is useful for gears.

I'd recommend them to everyone, more so people that suffer from very cold fingers (like myself)
