Fortunately for Gabes, I have more rep power than you...And so do I :)

it was a PM to me. Probably morally wrong of me to quote it.
well at least you didn't make it up Gabes.. her choice to take the discussion off-thread. Or yours, if you pm'ed her more verbal....
no witch hunt over here, I just wanted to get my narrative linear and cohesive. I do read this stuff you know.
cg5154 probably will come back to have a peek even though she's sworn she won't - it's a bit sad it got all sweaty. I'm not buying lots of people's simplistic takes on this shit to be honest, but the thread sure is interesting. Out of the barrage you definitely gain something - I think it's called "a backlog of work emails".

I'm lexically irked by the fact that 'shares' are generally owned by turn-a-blind-eye-to-greedy-resource/community-plundering bad naughty people baddies. Generally.

Trying to be ethical is full-time job. I gave up reading Ethical Consumer, cos it all started getting out of hand. Anyway, Ethical Consumer probably have an evil agenda, or have been bought out by Coca Cola or something.

Lay off the Coke.

BMMF, coca-cola donates part of its profits to charities, making it perfectly ethical. In fact, in 2004, Wal-Mart was the largest corporate (and therefore, probably overall) cash contributor in the US.
Anyone want to go to ASDA?

Yeah for someone preaching about moral decision making to quote a private message, which you admit was the wrong thing to do, is massively hypocritical.

I blame sports.
West Ham sponsored by XL
Man Utd sponsored by AIG
Newcastle sponsored by Northern Rock
the Varsity match sponsored by LehmansNow if they eschewed sponsorship like the Villa, maybe the credit crunch(tm) wouldn't be happening?

You try working with them. Vanity projects, oh did I just say that out loud?

Not quite the same thing as the moral/immoral decisions that decide how the wealth and well-being of a nation and world is distributed and determined is it though?

We're not going to come up with the replacement for capitalism on a bike forum and this is all turning a bit personal. (And any fucking student posting on this topic can STFU until they've spend 5 seconds living in the real world). Unless you are a complete paragon of virtue, who freecycles everything and wouldn't buy even buy a soya latte for how it's fucking up the world you can wind your fucking necks in.
It amazes me the amount of rampant consumerism I see on this forum that seems to be legitimised simply because it is niche and so called 'discerning' consumption (NJS, NOS, HHSB etc.) rather than overt (buy a Langster and you soon fucking hear about it). A city boy buys a £4k Pina and he's a cunt, you scrimp for second hand Hed3 / Arrospok etc. (not cos you need it mind but just cos you like the steez) and you're somehow better than him. Err...chello, same fucking impulse dude! Difference only lies in the level of disposable income & personal taste.
The great thing about this forum is that it brings together people from all different walks of life through a shared interest in bikes. Good things happen, like night rides, track days at HH, BBQs etc. Can we spend more time & effort on those things rather than calling each other cunts?

I think I understand what your point is JM: this is stupid and contentious, and hardly worth doing on a bike forum. Unfortunately, what you're also saying is: don't talk about serious things; don't disagree about serious things; and your opinion doesn't matter if you are a student - even if that means you may be better equipped to deal with these issues than someone who has spent the last 20 years weaving high quality silk into boutique cycling scarves (i.e. someone who studies corporate finance at the post-graduate level - which, for the record, I have not).

I didn't say that someone having a 4k bike is a cunt for having a 4k bike, to me, it's about where their money comes from. Having a 5litre car bought with bankers money is the ultimate sin in my eyes.
Anyway, I'm about to sell 2 of my bikes and spend vast sums on a new DH/Freeride whip. Fixed is so last year.

I guess I can ignore this thread and you guys can carry on infinitum. I just didn't like the ganging up and personal nature of some of the posts.
The forum is mainly for bike related stuff and I'd never want someone to feel ostracised as a result of anything outside of cycling (political views, line of work etc.). There's enough of that bullshit in the real world, outside of our hobbies.
And as for students - I'm not saying that your opinion doesn't matter. Uni is a time to form the viewpoints, opinions and credos that will shape the rest of your life. However, please don't labour under the misapprehension that you know shit from shinola at the ripe old age of 19 to 21.
agreed. i can't see her views as being that far out. its that Tax dodging Gabes deflecting his consumerist guilt after spend all that cash on those bikes ;)
