  • They tried communism, y'know, and it was an epic fail...

  • ^ So confrontational.
Not everyone's against you. Grab your vice of choice and chill.

I can't. I'm allergic to alcohol. It just makes me red and pukey.

On the upside, it means I'm a cheap date.

And anyway, you haven't said... what's a dollsnatch? Is it like a cradle-robber?

Terminology used in chris Morris' Nathan Barley s1e2. used in place of babe, darling, hun, sweetheart and so on.

  • They tried communism, y'know, and it was an epic fail...

Human society also tried feudalism, and rightly rejected it in favour of something better: capitalism.
To argue that we are at the end of human socio-economic development is sheer stupidity. We (humanity) will either progress or die.

  • "And anyway, you haven't said... what's a dollsnatch? Is it like a cradle-robber?"

it means you have your very own chatroom groomer.

be careful , he's probably a fat sweaty trucker from Hull called keith.

  • On the upside, it means I'm a cheap date.

    Is there any other kind?

Fuck off !... I'm from Bristol.

  • Sussed! What's worse is that they're for my new bankenger job!

  • Libertarian scum ;)

    Fucking funny

  • ^ I shat bricks!

  • ^ I shat bricks!

    Ha!

It was a bit of a brick shitting experience... And soul killing.

    Nice one Tom.

  • Buy some comfy shoes horatio... fetching tea / coke / midgets you'll be on your feet a lot.

  • anyone listening to radio 4 PM program from a few minutes ago?
an interview with the 'city boy' columnist.
worth a listen if it's going to be on listen again or bbciPlayer?

  • I'll believe it when I see it.

At the very least, it's proving to be extremely difficult, isn't it? Or have you already switched to using solar panels to power all your electronics at home?

[Edit] Btw... I'm not saying that because it's impossible, we shouldn't try. We should still try. No sense in making things any worse than they already are.

sorry for dragging this up now, I've been out all day with no time for forum frivolities.

It's far more than "solar panels" I'm afraid, we need a global change in social structure, an increase in subsistence farming and a change in attitude to consumerism and high capitalism.

It bother me when people make blanket and dismissive statements about it being "too late" or "not worth bothering" or as you said "impossible"

It has nothing really to do with communism, nor is it anarchy Vs capitalism, it's about society's responsibility. starting at street level, not government level.

Anyone interested in this sort of thing could do worse than to watch The power of community, about how Cuba survived their peak oil crisis.

  • Looks like it's long trousers from now on chaps.

The FSA have banned shorts!...... of financial shares for the rest of the year. In addition, the SEC today stated that it will halt short selling of U.S. banks, insurance companies and securities firms for the time being.

  • I got the following via email today from someone at Bloomberg. Synopsis of investment strategy:

If you had purchased £1000 of Northern Rock shares one year ago
it would now be worth £4.95, with HBOS, earlier this week your
£1000 would have been worth £16.50, £1000 invested in XL Leisure
would now be worth less than £5, but if you bought £1000 worth
of Tennents Lager one year ago, drank it all, then took the
empty cans to an aluminium re-cycling plant, you would get £214.

So based on the above statistics the best current investment
advice is to drink heavily and re-cycle.

Sorry to revive a contentious dead thread, but I remembered posting this link at one point (when some requested a clear explanation of what exactly was going on). Not sure if anyone ever listened to it, but I recommend you still do.

Anyway, just reviving it so say they've made a follow-up. It's a bit more fearful about the future, and goes into some really interesting financial weirdness (credit default swaps). Check it out if you're interested (check out both, really).

(and the last story on this episode [about "naked short selling"] is also interesting, and related: http://www.thisamericanlife.org/Radio_Episode.aspx?sched=1260)

  • There goes civilisation... on its way to the mosque...

  • for a hot date

  • This monday i have mostly been reading financial news sites

The fiscal profligacy of the current US administration will remain in the memory. In just seven and a half years they have managed to almost double the US National Debt to US$10.15 Trillion. This is quite remarkable especially when you consider that the previous administration had posted three years of budget surpluses in 1998, 1999 and 2000; during which time the National Debt was actually reduced.

    the term is "fucked"

  • Bump.

  • found this thread 🧵 whilst looking for that of Mr. Schik’s ‘Lost Civilisations’..

reading 📖 a book this evening on the topic, an excellent read in fact,

    ‘Lost Civilisations’ by Austen Atkinson

Thoroughly recommended reading or picture viewing!
