Damn i hope it's still available. I'll take any excuse to buy newscientist and feel clever.
NewScientist is the tabloid of science journalism.

That's why I love it so..

NewScientist is the tabloid of science journalism.
That explains the 'PAEDOPHILE VIRUS IN LABORATORY SHOCKER' and 'BRITISH SCIENTISTS DISCOVER AIDS WAS CAUSED BY IMMIGRANTS' headlines.

so let me get this straight....
The last Big Bang created a rather large thing called 'the universe'And some dudes in a hole in the ground in Switzerland are trying to recreate it without knowing the full implications of it going slightly tits up.
And Tragic thinks he's going to be protected by a tinfoil hat ....
Crazy.

Rep for being the first person I've seen so far make the Half Life reference.
What I really want to know though, is what I'm looking at here:
It seems to be the most posted image of the collider and I don't know what it is. Where is the particle tunnel? Was this picture taken during construction, and the particle tunnel actually now runs through the centre of the shot, or is it not even a part of the image?
I don't understand the physics of the collider, but I do understand what they're trying to do and how they're doing it. I just don't like it when we get bombarded with all these images of 'Alice' and 'Atlas' without any explanation of what they are.

Even better

That's Atlas.
Hopefully this will answer your questions -

At 1127 (0927 GMT) on Friday, the LHC's online logbook recorded a quench in sector 3-4 of the accelerator, which lies between the Alice and CMS detectors.
Blah, blah, blah - as if this wasn't a direct quote from Red Dwarf.

If anyone has a spare copy of the LHC supplement in today's Times could they possibly save it for me?
