I treat everyone with the same amount of bitterness, distrust and phlegm-inducing disgust.
Now, why the FUCK wasn't this posted in Misc??!? Fucking forum testing amateur mofos!!!

Hey all,
I've just signed up to this forum after being finding out about Londonfgss from Cycle Chat Forums.
Being used to common road/racing bikes with shimano/campag groupsets, fixed wheel bikes (all be it simpler in design and no. of parts) are completely new to me.The forum seems to be incredibly active (which is great for advice for newbies.....more questions to come), but i have been a little confused over the 5 posts and 48 hour wait ruling.
Ideally, id like to start a basic questions thread, so i can pickup a few answers before i can start building myself a fixed wheel bike, but am having to post on other threads without a decent knowledge base (e.g. remarks).

That's the entire point of the 48 hr rule, so you don't just sign up and ask a question that chances are has already been answered or a similar one has and can be found with some searching and you can tack on the end if you don't understand one part of the reply. If your question has not been answered 48 hours is not along time to wait to be able to post it.

And it has stopped nearly all spammers.
And it frustrates the hell out of trolls.
So for a little patience from new members, we get a lovely and mostly peaceful forum (well, we call each other names, but that's to be expected).

and far better to search for old threads for basic questions (yes they have all been asked before, seriously, even what you are about to ask) where the advice may come from people who actually know what they're talking about, instead of some of the five-minute wonders who've suddenly become know-alls after buying a pista/plug/twatser and riding round the block for a week.

Welcom Aserota - there is an amazing amount of into on the Mech pages, it would take a good few days to read around and get your ideas straight before you benefit from a better directed question. As VB points out the rule works!
if you get real stuck PM Hippy, he often takes new young ripe members under his wing and off to quiet parks around the outskirts of london....

That's how Greasy Slag found it so easy to make the most of this forum and coincidentally enough, it's also how he thought up his username.. :)

How do you know most of the newbies are using the search function and finding things out for themselves? The only ones we see are the ones that post.

Exactly. We can't really get upset or annoyed with the ones that don't post, can we?
-
• #169
true, but we can with the ones that don't (or worse, do and yet start a new thread instead of adding to an old one).

Steady on Fred. An honest mistake on my part there....

Perhaps VB could add a function where for the first 2 months each time a noob tries to create a thread the title is put through the search facility.

Not you specifically, don't take it personal - have seen it 4-5 times this morning...
and everyone here knows that IMO no-one should be allowed to start new threads - almost everything here has a thread already

Actually, I could just add that for everyone... some kind of "you entered this title, these are the threads that look similar" type thing.

• #174
Very good idea.
-
• #175
good plan, sometimes I find I'll type in a search and get nothing back, because the exact wording of the thread title or word is different, which then forces me to have another go with a slightly different spelling.
Anything that can make a search easier is good in my books, give it to everyone, new members aren't the only ones who need help searching for stuff.
We've got to remember that fixed gear/single speed bikes are not that complex. There are not that many new developments. In the time that this forum has been going practically of the issues that could be raised have been raised. Newbies have two options:
What really PISSES me off is when you post in the MISCELLANEOUS & MEANINGLESS category folk still complain.
Also when one person posts a question no one bothers, yet the same/very similar question is posted by an established member, folk are tripping over themselves to help.
