London thieves are quite discerning - essentially driven by discerning punters who are happy to buy goods at knock down prices from Brick Lame Market!

^ that's really nice. Exactly what colour/lacquer combination is it, and how much was it? Might get my shopper done like that.

Armourtex Blue Starlight £120

Picked up my Motobecane this week - went for a sort-of sepia brown metallic:
More pictures here. It's a good job - the metallic's in the powder coat rather than the lacquer, which makes for a much more subtle sparkle. Good, fast service again too.
That's really nice. What's the RAL, if you don't mind me asking? It has the look of something very expensive! -

Does Armourtex do cranks ? And are they expensive?
-
• #1133
Gav that is niceeee!
maddy they do but you have a minimum order cost of like £40 so its best to get multiple things done

Thanks. Stupidly I didn't make a note of the number, but it wasn't that expensive - about £85 I think. They definitely have costlier options. I'll ask them what the RAL was next time I go.

Here is some pics of a ribble steel reynolds 653 frame that I got powdercoated at Armourtex.
It's Ral 9005(jet black) with Ultramarine Lacquer.
In some lights it's sparkly green in others it's Sparkly blue. I like it!

This may be a stupid question-even dumb questions sometimes need to be asked :)
If a frame is being sandblasted do I have to peel off stickers (there is a lot on there) or will the sandblasting just take them off?
I am thinking the possibility exists that the stickers will require so much concentration of the sandblasting to remove them that it might damage the frame.

sandblasting removes light rust, so stickers are nothing in comparison.

Sorry I am being dumb does that mean I don't have to remove them?

You don't have to remove them.

I'm starting a Surly Steamroller build and I'm thinking of having the frame powder coated. It's currently in the cream/pale green colour. I don't live in London so using Armourtex isn't really and option. I've contacted a local powder coating 'specialist' who's quoted me £80+ VAT to powder coat and apply a clear lacquer, and he says he will not need to strip the frame of it's original colour, just powder coat over it. Does this sound right? And is it safe to let a company who don't necessarily specialise in bike frames loose on my frame? The gallery on their website shows a variety of other products coated but no bikes.

that sounds a bit shit to me. I had it done locally by a company for 35 quid, that included sandblasting, degreasing and coating. I'd recommend phoning up a couple more companies and getting quotes.

Doesn't sound right to me. I did a few days freelance work some years back for a coatings company and for them you have to strip the frame to do a powdercoat so I don't see how they can do it without. They could do a variation which was a bit like powder without stripping but it was specialist stuff they used for things like coating metal bollards or exposed metalwork in buildings, that might explain the high price.

How thick is a normal coat of powder? I want to get a seat post done, should I take the right size (27,2) or get a smaller one (27,0) to compensate?
-
• #1148
They don't coat the inside of your tubes. If any powder coat does get inside the seat tube it won't be thick enough to warrant changing a seatpost size and you can always use wet and dry paper to remove excess layers.
-

I meant I want to get the seat post painted. this will add a bit of thickness.
-

Sorry. Yes this will add a little bit of extra thickness. I had my fork steerer painted lightly at the top and I had to remove quite a bit of excess coating before I could fit a stem on it.
Ah, an uncommon problem around here where shiny suspension is still the magnet of choice for the lifter crowd.
