Digging up an old thread...
Went for the cutthroat with disposable blades, it was a miraki, cheapo thing on amazon, stainless steel. Not as pretty as the dovo horn handle ones, but does the job VERY well.
Pack of ten blades, which you snap in half to give twenty cutting blades, was a few quid. Bargain.
The shave is extraordinarily close. The guy who cuts my hair was the brylcreem barber of the year 99 with the old style shaving competition, and thus knows his stuff. People paying £60 at a bond st place will want a v close shave, so it's against the grain. You have to be careful with prep and soothing lotion afterwards so they don't get razor burn. For day-to-day, he goes with the grain, as against takes off a bit much for his liking, apparently.
Anyhoo, I'm dark haired, but not particularly beardy. A decent shave will last two days, and a shave in the morning will mean I'm still looking very freshly shaven in the evening, which is nice.
Cut myself a few times in the beginning, but got the hang of it quite quickly. Now onto my third blade, so it's working out at about £12 for a year's worth of shaving. Loving it.
Using a king of shaves low foam gel, right out of the shower, then e45 post-shave.
Those who are thinking of cutthroat / straight, go for it!
Just get a disposable first to see if you get along with it. Once all my blades are gone i'll be getting a non-disposable one.

I use a gillete super speed its amazing.
Im also waiting for crimbo so i can get a cutthroat(straight razor) -

Straight razors are awesome, especially if you're the type of person who doesn't shave for a few weeks at a time. Slicing that shit off in one foul swoop is unbelievably satisfying.
Great advice getting a disposable first too, I picked up a bunch of vintage straight razors off ebay when I first started using them, and because I didn't know about taking care of them, they rusted to buggery in a few months. Shame, some were lovely.
But yeah, cuthroat, do it! Just pay attention to the angle, there are some videos on youtube which explain it better than text does.

dry shave with a mac 3. I've never understood why anyone would want to a.) dull the blades ability to cut hair by adding water to reduce the friction - its the whole purpose. b.) while the skin on your face is at its most tender and raw cover it in a chemical detergents to fuck up it even more give it a go just once.

Badger hair brush, a decent moisturising soap, a traditional wilkinson sword safety razor....[edit]..The brush ensures you never get ingrowing hairs and exfoliates too. And don't be afraid of using ice water and an astringent post-shave.
...If you want to look like you've had a shave you have to wet shave. If you want a beard then an electric beard trimmer is needed to keep it even and in shape.
When it comes to wet shaving ditch the mach 3 and the quattro and get yourself a single-blade safety razor. Shaving with a mach 3 is like riding an 18 gear mtb in town, shaving with a quattro is like riding a 21 gear mtb with full suspension.
Start with a preshave oil - I use the Truefitt and Hill Ultimate Comfort. Then use a badger hair brush and a good quality shaving cream - I use either Geo F Trumper or Truefitt and Hill. Then use a Merkur safety razor with Merkur blade. Always go with the grain. Shave after a shower with really hot water to open the pores and soften the hair, and then use cold water to close the pores and stop irritation. You can use an alum block and some post shave creme if you like [edit]

Yep it's all about the prep work - open up the pores, use oil, use a good gel on top of that Clinique (Aloe) M Gel is tops if a touch 'spensive , shave, then re-lather and go back the way against the grain, cold water to close the pores up, then use moisturiser. [edit].
*Currently use a Trumper "Super Badger" brush (9 years am I really that old?)
*Trumper Lime soap
*Merkur razor
*Blades - currently Merkur but I'm sure there are better ones.A friend told me it is like baking bread, do it slowly and properly and you have lovely bread. Do it quickly and you have a brick.
These videos are very good for anyone who is in danger of being granted an electric and wants to know why I've typed this post

How To Shave With A Single-Blade Razor[/ame] -
• #207
I use the 'Super Badger"
And Trumper Lime soap is the business!
I've used the same style of razor for the last 18 years - two blade, fixed head, lubrastrip. Wilkinson Sword stopped doing them, and now Gillette have fucked them off.
I'm using these at the mo:

There's nothing quite like starting a wet shave at the chin-and ending up at the back of your head. Started shaving my head whilst living in the alps, spending so much time wearing beanies, goggles and helmet. I guess I just prefer not having to pose in front of a mirror whilst I scrape "product" through my barnet...

My first choice is a feather straight razor - so sharp you only need a once over. Second choice is a real straight(I have 30 or so to choose from each has a different feel) Third choice would be a double edge, prefereably adjustable - opened up to an extreme setting.
I can't imagine what would make me go back to crap3 shaves - I guess I would have to be locked in a bomb shelter or something......actually I just wouldn't shave....go all trampy -
• #221
Potetskrel - you may want to check out straightrazorplace - a few guys there had a go at making their own. From what I remember the grinding is quite a task. I managed to make my own knife with a hollow grind that shaved - it wasn't very practical though!

PM if you're interested.

I'm currently into the three piece razors with lord blades, I'm yet to be afflicted by the usual terrible razor rash, and I don't cut myself, and I don't use moisturiser/ aftershave.
brilliant things. -

I'm all fucking barber pole slant bar and feathers this week. Go me.
I use a hunting knife.
Nah, Mach-something (3? 4? 5? Can't recall which) for me. Only use Shavers to trim my beard.
Blades always gives me the best result I need.
I've been wanting to try a cut-throat. Now I know what to ask for christmas.
Anyone shave without foam/lather here?
