Since last summer I gave up on Mach 3's and started into the world of DE shaving. Got a blade sampler pack, a decent badger hair brush and have gone through various soaps and creams. My experience of shaving has gone from a chore into a hobby. I get closer and with less burn. I now look at shaving gear in the same way that I ogle bike parts.
As a sort of stepping stone toward straight razor shaving I started using a shavette a couple of months ago. Some say it's not quite the same as using a real straight but it's still a lot closer than using a normal double edged razor. It's great fun and I think I'm ready to try a straight - the holy grail of shaving. Don't want to spend too much as there many vintage "shave ready" ones on the bay, but there is just too much choice.

Isn't there a scene in Monty Python's Life of Brian where they walk past a preacher with an Irish accent talking about nine bladed. You'd have to mount it on the wall and rub your face against it.

You've hit the nail on the head. People do see it as a chore and, rather than spend a relaxing twenty minutes shaving and then time at the weekend honing/stropping, will settle for a quick but poorer shave.
However, there's nothing stopping you shaving in the evening - with a good shave that should last all the next day.
I shave in the evening before bed. To the eye, it lasts through the next day. To the touch, i barely get 5 hours.
shave in the shower for victory.

i'm totally happy with mach3. easy to use close enough and i never cut myself. gonna get one of these for it
the best thing did to myself regarding shaving was buying a good brush, the next best thing was getting actual shaving soap.
i enjoy taking my time to do it nice and close. i always shave in two turns: one in the direction of the stubs and then again finishing off in the opposite direction.

Having spent a while chatting to the manager at Trumpers I bought a cut throat that takes disposable blades. The traditonal ones will need sharpening occasionally and it's not cheap. Whereas the ones that take disposable blades are cheaper and you save on the faffing using a strop etc.
You can get lessons on how to shave at trumpers and a few other establishments. The alternative is to practice on a balloon, cover it in foam and shave it clean. When you can do that you should be ok to do it to yourself. I did not bother with either and lacerated myself a few times at the beginning.
Cut throat is the closest shave and has the advantage of being able to remove a full beard with no trouble.

So how much do one of those cost, and how much to replace the blades? I have wanted to stop using machs for ages now.

[ame="http://badgerandblade.com/vb/showthread.php?t=17270"]The Sanguine Disposable Cut Throat - Badger & Blade[/ame]
or http://www.carterandbond.co.uk/detail.phtml?pID=DS1010
and then something like
[ame="http://www.amazon.co.uk/Merkur-Stainless-Platinum-Safety-Blades/dp/B000IB0G28"]Merkur Stainless Platinum Safety Razor Blades 10 Pack: Amazon.co.uk: Health & Beauty[/ame]
there are quite a few options for both the handles and blades, find one that is comfortable for you

Thanks James, this is much appreciated. I have wanted to do this for ages and had no idea it was attainable at reasonable cost. Mach 3's etc always seemed such a waste.

I'm going to end up sound like a Clinique whore, but I picked up their skincare range a couple of weeks ago and I'm loving it. I had a 4 day beard this morning, but used their face wash and face scrub in the shower, before using their shave cream.
I'd never used a shaving cream before and didn't feel comfortable that it didn't lather up like I was used to, but I got a really close shave, the blade didn't clog up and I didn't get much irritation - and I have really sensitive skin.
Finish off with their aftershave balm and I'm good to go... Mmm... Kissably smooth...
