Shaving, Wet shave vs electric

  • Body shop cream shave & a good brush.... the lather's the thing.....

  • I've got to be honest - I am tempted by the idea of a safety razor, but get the feeling it's just the utilitarian/anti-modern/romantic/hipster side of me coming through.

I've used Mach 3 since I was 15, and have bought cheap blades from eBay for years, which end up lasting longer because I take care to prep my skin in the shower to soften the hairs, but to be honest it's never been as close a shave as I'd like - even though I always shave against the grain.

So just how much closer is a safety razor? I'm half way to buying one, but need that last bit of persuasion...

  • this thread evens up the feminity of the forum that the lack of actually girls creates.

  • Just get laser hair removal if you want the utalitarian option, no need to shave at all... way smoother than any shave ;)

  • Wet shave.

I collect and restore cut-throat razors and there is nothing that comes close to a proper shave if it's done properly.

It's not that difficult to get the hang of and although the initial outlay seems steep, you never have to buy razors ever again.

  • I think I might go for a few cut-throat shaves and see if I like it, consult the barber and perhaps make an investment if I like it...

  • my dad and brother also have the philips vacuum which they use while driving to work.

irresponsible. can they not just get up ten minutes earlier rather than risking some innocent persons life. assuming that is they are not being driven.

    sorry if i missed something.

  • A friend of mine used to work for Gillette pretty high up the marketing chain, and he told me they have invented the ultimate razor, that never dulls, never needs replacing, and will never see the light of day, as it is patented to fuck and locked away, allowing them to bring out more "inovations" to reel suckers in year after year - his own opinion was that the sensor excel was the best razor they ever made

The king of shaves razor is the best i have used.

Part of the reason people rave about having a shave at a barber, is that your face is prepped properly before the shave, which is 90% of the way to avoiding razor burn etc - if you replicate that at home, even a single blade disposible will do the job

so much protection that he felt he could blab about it to you without fear of repercussions? i highly doubt they have invented a non dulling blade as they would have sold it and made a bomb replacing every single blade everywhere. but they don't because they didn't.

  • Just wait until Ramon hears about this!!

  • even a single blade disposible will do the job

A single balde razor is likely to give a better shave.

A lot of irritation occurs with multi-bladed razors because dead skin cells, stubble and soap get caught between the blades and dragged across the sensitive, freshly shaven skin.

Yikes. Along the lines of the oil companies suppressing the development of the 100mpg carb. Where's Seagal when you need him?

Obviously the development of 20 blade razors is diminishing returns but if straight razors are all that there'd be more people using them. This discussion has the whiff of the metrosexual and 'male grooming' is a bit wank really.

I do own a straight razor. I bought it after watching Angel Heart. I would not shave with it as shaving is a chore and I think needs to be done quickly. I also have a badger brush and use shaving soap as it makes shaving a weeks worth of stubble easier.

  • ....if straight razors are all that there'd be more people using them....

....shaving is a chore and I think needs to be done quickly....

You've hit the nail on the head. People do see it as a chore and, rather than spend a relaxing twenty minutes shaving and then time at the weekend honing/stropping, will settle for a quick but poorer shave.

However, there's nothing stopping you shaving in the evening - with a good shave that should last all the next day.

Very true, though I have shaved in the evening for the last five years anyway.

At the risk of derailment, I'd like to see one or two of your razors if possible!

    +1 plenty of lather

  • What is this girly talk of "preparing your skin" .... from experience I will never trust a man who spends more than 60 seconds grooming himself ... just doens't seem to have their priorities right.

  • I prepare my skin with Tabasco.

I'll see what I can dig out...

I use these two most often:

This is my Mappin & Webb seven day set:

There are others in various stages of restoration but I don't have pictures to hand.

  • All this reminds me of this. (It's Something Hell's)

Against the grain! That is folical heresy!

A fresh mach 3 shaves incredibly close, god knows why youd need to use it against the grain too.

I do not think you will like using either a safety razor or cut throat at all. It is more of a raw experience, takes delicate patience and is very tactile. You have to be willing to enjoy the scraping razor. You will only get a good result with skill/care & enough time.

  • I hate wet shaving with a passion and so have used clippers for the last however many years.
One thing that shits me is how crap clippers are and how often they break.

I was needing to replace another broken pair the other day when I remembered seeing some ad on TV (Damn you marketing) for this which at 3 quid, seems to have temporarily solved my problem.

I'll update when it dies but 3 quid!

My Uni Lecturer in Metallurgy worked for gillette developing the titanium treated blades for the mach products.

Apparently a twin blade razor was proven in their research to be the best performing by far in terms of hair removal & comfort. But of course they want to keep selling people expensive multiple blades.

In terms of a non-dulling razor something ceramic would probably work.

  • I use this

and these, for the tough to get to places

  • When I'm feeling lazy I just whip out one of these

    great for cutting out shapes
