  • They're metal but the C-Clip bit is likely to give out before the body itself does.

Ah thank for the heads up.

Indra do you have cleat covers?
I really would just buy cheap spd shoes/pedals for commuting and save the spdsl for long rides and track

I don't but even if I did I'd probably forget them lol, I don't commute on the seta it just seems wherever I go I end up standing on gravel or something.

Seems road pedals are relatively trendy in the fixie scene at the mo.
If you need to walk just run atacs or spds like everyone else.

I commute in straps and vans.

  • Shimano do cleat covers that make the trek from the car park to my desk and particularly stairs a piece of piss in SPD-SL.

Flipping between SPD-SL and ATAC the main difference I found was how much less stable Sidis felt with my foot always feeling like it was pronating off the side of the pedal.

  • Indra, why don't you get a saddlebag and put the cleat covers in there? Then you'll always have them when you're on the DangerBike.

FWIW I think spd-sl cleats last ages, I've run in mine (late for train...) and may have walked up a hill or two and they're totally fine.

  • Ah good, probably just me being paranoid.

    I guess I could get a saddlebag.

I'm thinking about never buying cleats again and just buying a new pair of pedals every time and then selling on the pedals brand new for a tenner and keeping the cleats.

    Profit.

  • I got a lots of new Shimano M520 pedals because they were cheaper than the cleats (£18)

    #csb.

  • You can get cleats for like £6 on eBay :P

  • Or work in a bike shop and get them all on trade.

  • Or that.

  • just get some spd and stop worrying about the cleat.

  • I have SPD's they're on a different bike.

I was just enquiring about the SPD-SL's because I have them on one bike.

  • Time ATACs

  • Might give them another try some time.

  • I actually accidentally unclipped on Monday with Atacs. I clearly was skidding too aggressively.

  • Touche.... I unclipped from mine fairly often.

  • My first accidental unclip since buying atacs/sidis almost a year ago though.

  • Fair enough, I guess that I skid too angrily.

  • I ride brakeless and find ATACs are good for me and haven't ever unclipped. Used Eggbeaters which made me very nervous as never felt secure enough.

N.B. I am a very gentle skidder, my bike doesn't like it rough

  • I love my light action Speedplays :)

  • My first accidental unclip since buying atacs/sidis almost a year ago though.

Had a minor accident in mine (over the bars kinda affair) and I have NO idea how I managed to stay on my feet with my bike next to me! Either I'm a closet ninja, or the Atacs can read my mind. Either way, a year on and I love them even more!

  • I'm waiting for a pair of these to turn up:

  • ^Let me know how you get on, Been looking at these myself.

  • How would this be for an everday street setup as well as long rides in the weekend?
    All brakeless

As well as this ive noticed a lot of other people suggesting 'mtb' shoes for riding on the road/street. Are they just a little bit sturdyer with more of a sole than road shoes? or am i missing something?

particularly nice looking for cycling shoes i must add.

  • 2 bolt holes mean they can be used with ATACs.

They are easier to walk in, have more grip, a recessed cleat and are just generally more practical.

  • Thanks Indra, that makes sense.

  • They are easier to walk in, have more grip, a recessed cleat and are just generally more practical.

    This.

Also they tend to be double sided, making it easier to clip in at light.

No reason why you wouldn't run them on a road bike for a long distance ride.

(Ordered the Giro Privateer as well, fit very well like a Sidis, and should preserve my rather appalling looking Spes carbon shoes).
