Which Clipless pedals?

  • Shimano do cleat covers that make the trek from the car park to my desk and particularly stairs a piece of piss in SPD-SL.

Wild idea, Steve. But had you considered taking off your cycling shoes for walking? Then you don't wear out the heels on the ground.

Presumably you leave your shoes at your desk?

I bet the cleat covers are more expensive and just as heavy as a pair of vans/cons slip-ons? I'd carry some of those in my bag to enable maximum walkage.

  • Cleat covers are sub-£15 and much easier to take on and off than the effort of removing cycling shoes and putting on slip-ons.

They also weigh next to nothing and take up hardly any room, so you can keep them in your jersey pocket to stop your cleats getting filled with dirt/gravel/snow for during roadside piss breaks.

  • As well as this ive noticed a lot of other people suggesting 'mtb' shoes for riding on the road/street. Are they just a little bit sturdyer with more of a sole than road shoes? or am i missing something?

particularly nice looking for cycling shoes i must add.

The pedals will come with SH-51 cleats, and you shouldn't need replacements for a while, so you could put the money you save towards the PD-M540 pedals instead, they'll last longer.

  • I left that bit out becuSe I thought the question was strictly on shoes.

After riding SPD SL for a few months I became very confident in them, and they only unclipped one but on the weakened I took the MTB out with SPDs and old speshy shoes and not was there a difference!
The retention felt so inadequate and I unclipped bunny hopping a few times.

It just felt like I was like standing on golf balls compared to feeling to locked in with the road combo.

  • Indra you're doing it wrong ;) I've ridden spds while racing and been completely fine.

  • I was fine riding fixed brakeless on them for months but then on Sunday they just unclipped multiple times.

  • Apply allen key to tightenny-uppy bolt?

  • Full tension already.

  • That's worrying, knackered spring? New cleats time? (I know they're metal, but they do wear out eventually).

  • 1 month old cleats, I guess the pedals could just be worn but before I built my dolan they were my daily pedals and held up fine, it just seems odd that they'd wear out when they weren't being used.

  • You've clearly got a case of Cack Foot™

  • Mice!

You could always try Exustar Keo copies, I've now got them on five bikes and have had no problems, they weigh nothing and come complete with cleats for £25 so if you don't like them, who cares?

You've experienced a superior pedal feeling and have now come to realise SPDs are shit. I've got two words for you

    Time ATAC

Had them and didn't get on with them, got offered a different pair for free so might try them again on the next build.

If I don't get on with them you can have them.

  • Awesome

Hah, they're far from shit, especially when I don't have to fork out new cleat a couple time a year.

But he's taking his cycling shoes off for the whole day!

    Cleat covers are for buyers.

  • Anyone got experience of Exustar E-PR70 pedals? (Look compatible)

  • Is there much of a difference between SPDs and ATACs for brakeless? I just bought a pair of mtb shoes and a set of m520s, but from what I've read online, it seems that unclipping's a bit of a problem. Is it worth my time splashing out the 50 quid or so on ATACs or should I stick with the SPDs for now?

  • It's all opinion. I toured 800+ miles brakless with spds and had no problems. Other people will tell you'll die. Make sure you don't use the multi direction spd cleats.

  • atac's every time.

  • ^ opinion.
