SPD-SLs and shoes tried (thank you Hats), and purchased. Brace yourself HH for my awesome speed / unclip failures
-
• #453
use the cleat covers
I don't stand in muddy fields so I've switch my boots and training shoes to these bad boys... Keep On Kovers. No more digging into pockets to find the covers at home/office.

OK, but, in the long run, you're saying Speedplays > more regular SPD-SL systems ect
SPD-SL are better because all the gubbins are in the pedals not the bottom of your shoe and they don't need stupid covers. I agree with Scherrit though in that Speedplay are the best for biomechanics, ie. if you have any weird needs like say you're a numb nut and move to midfoot.

Hippy you legend. Now I can go back sp for commuting.

I still have the normal covers which I use with my race shoes but these are much nicer for commuting and my longer training rides when I have to stop and refill bottles/have a piss/etc. Got 'em off my usual speed (play) dealer a while ago.

• #457
Who's your usual dealer?
-
• #458
Scherrit on here or Bike Whisperer, out there >>>

Speedplay have a crazy amount of float though, something to consider

How much longer do speedplay cleats last than SPD-SL?
I'm sick of regularly paying £20 for cleats.
-
• #461
How are you wearing through cleats so quickly?
Not really no -
• #462
My spd-sl cleats lasted ages
-
• #463
I ride a fair bit and find myself walking, plus I ride brakeless and am paranoid as fuck of unclipping accidentally again so replace then when I see they look worn.
-
• #464
If its the rubberised parts that look worn that's normal wear from walking, won't have a massive bearing on whether you unclip. Don't walk ride
-
• #465
That about when the yellow bit fall off?
-
• #466
Are you jogging in the cleats? Haha yeah then you should replace them
-
• #467
Speedplay do need a bit more matainence than SPD but generally just a bit of grease in the cleats will do.
Do the pedals every year.
Lost one of my cleat covers during a ride so I'll be ordering the ones Hippy mentioned above and probably go back to wearing them for commuting too.

Or you could perhaps, you know, add a brake?
I'm sick of regularly paying £20 for cleats.
You're the one who choose those over SPD!
-
• #469
I could.

Speedplay cleats are more than that and don't last as long in my experience. I walk very little in my cycling shoes though.
-
• #471
Yeah I knew about the price but was wondering if they lasted longer :(
-
• #472
They're metal but the C-Clip bit is likely to give out before the body itself does.
-
• #473
Indra do you have cleat covers?
I really would just buy cheap spd shoes/pedals for commuting and save the spdsl for long rides and track -
• #474
Seems road pedals are relatively trendy in the fixie scene at the mo.
If you need to walk just run atacs or spds like everyone else. -
• #475
Yep.
Cool, I wear a wide 6 so should fit ok - I'll text you to sort out a good time :)
