  • Yes! I'm in. Will bring tenner and beers.

  • List:

    1. Tomasito
    2. Rodeo?
    3. Stablebarns?
  • ah shit is this full.....?when you doing it?

  • Nope, stick yourself on the list. Once we have enough people we arrange a time that suits everybody. Did you know you left your lithium grease at mine?

  • ah i wondered where that had gone...ill come get it soon! ill just check my funds, and see if the parts i want are in stock, then i will confirm...hopefully tonight!

  • Leni
my pal picco has a truing stand, currently at Rik's, he may be happy to lend you it ...

  • I can borrow one from a few places , I just always wanted one for myself. Although for the class that would be great.

  • £20, and you can borrow my Park TS2 For the evening, would require some form of deposit though!

  • I'm in! But.... What about bits? Do we bring our own? Or do we just watch? Do you recommend taking apart and old wheel to start with... adding new spokes? Or just get a nice new hub and rim and keep taking it apart until it's perfect?
Is the technique the same with dished wheels... can we learn both? 26" wheels.... ah ah ah I'm getting a bit ahead of myself with excitement.... all the girls I can impress!

  • It would be more rewarding to build your own wheel(s) however I have old wheels in my shed which you can use for practising - the choice is yours. If you build your own you will have to choose and buy the parts, although myself and the forum will guide you if you want. For starters you could use my spoke length calculator: http://lenni.me/edd/

Dished wheels are a bit more complicated and I wouldn't recommend them for your first time. Besides, I don't have a dishing tool. Building 26" is the same as 700C wheels.

all the girls I can impress!

I hate to shatter you dreams but ... ah, forget it ... girls dig wheelbuilders!

    1. Tomasito
    2. Rodeo?
    3. Stablebarns
  • Yeah, with the girls, I'll be like.... "Hi there, nice bike! But your front wheel...? Perhaps you'd like me to re-lace your spokes in a more aesthetically appropriate manner? I think that pattern really clashes with your front basket!"

Ok I would like some advice. I'd just like to build a nice set of all weather all riding sealed bearing quality wheels. I'm happy to stick with Open Pros or CXP's, as I've had them on everything from Campag road wheels to a System ex flip flop... or was it a flip flip? Fixed fixed?

But Hubs? I don't know where to start. If I learn to build, then is it not suddenly more economical to own something of quality? As in, I'll be able to keep it running for more than the life of one rim... something I've rarely done... as the cost of a rebuild Vs a bargain new wheel is so hard to justify.

  • I have a System Ex/Formula on CXP22 and I'm happy with it.

You could get nicer hubs like Goldtec, Miche, Surly, Paul Comp ... or even splash out on Dura Ace or Phil Woods. What do you want and how much money do you want to spend?

I think my next set of wheels will be Goldtechs on CXP33s.

  • I had a quick read after posting the last bit.... and I like the idea of keeping it LOCAL! I try and stick to Hope with my MTB bits now... help our slumping economy.... so Goldtec I think! Sealed bearings... nice colours and UK made!

Are any of the rims easier to build with?

  • For building its all a bit much of a muchness. I personally like CXP33s because they have a nice "nipple guide"; H+ Sons don't have them and it's easier to drop a nipple into the inside of the rim. You can work around that though. For budget go CXP22 or Open Sport.

  • i would be in if it could happen between the 9th and 14th of may? that's when i am next down in london.

i am definitely down for it if possible...

  • Well, if the others are happy with it I could do Saturday, 9th or Sunday, 10th.

  • 10th would be good, busy on the 9th unfortunately.

  • Great! I can't do Sat 9th... But Sun 10th May is good.

  • I'm in and I have a truing stand.

If Rodeo confirms we're good to go. Is there anyone who can't do May 10th around, say, around midday?

  • BTW, I would love to hold a few "ladies night" repair workshops, let me know if you know someone who would be interested.

    i am up for this
