  • i read somewhere* that the tapers differ marginally in angle

I read that somewhere too. I also read that the across flats dimension was different. Then I grabbed a bunch of JIS and ISO axles out of my parts bin and measured them, and found that there's a lot of BS out there, much of it traceable back to Sheldon Brown, who was wrong on this one occasion.

  • ^^ both ISO & JIS BB axles have 2deg taper.
ISO BB's taper down a bit more so that the square bit on the end is smaller than a JIS - that's why the learned gentlemen above suggest a JIS bb should be 2mm shorter in axle length than the intended ISO BB
(IIRC 75's take 109, so a JIS equivalent would be 107mm)
ignore anyone who says the difference is 4.5mm they are followers of sheldon brown. I, like mr lee above am a disciple of the tester

  • Best DIY way to shim 25.4mm handlebar for 26mm stem?
    coke can?

  • Buy some 0.3mm (12 thou.) shim stock, brass or nickel plated steel work equally well, you can cut either with stout scissors.

  • +1
coke can always starts to move after a while for me.

  • Or just buy a Nitto shim if bike shops are closer to your house than engineering shops.

  • What about a plastic bottle? just thinking it could sort of mold to the shape of the stem better, less likely to slip, maybe.

  • It'd also probably compress.

  • It'd also probably [strike]compress[/strike] fail catastrophically.

    This guy knows ... ;)

  • The BYC is coming along. Needs chainring bolt spacers, superglue for bar tape, a non-track ratio (50-14 in pic - will go up to 19, 17 if feeling beastly) and an imperial size allen key just smaller than 5mm to get on the road. Can't wait.

  • And looking at that pic just now I might reglue the rear tub.

  • Also bodged shim depends a lot on what bars you have, drops or horns, real bad idea...

  • an imperial size allen key just smaller than 5mm

So that would be 3/16" then :-)

  • That's actually very helpful, cheers.

  • Maybe some carbon assembly paste could tighten dat home made shim up?

  • Or just buy a proper shim.

  • +1 on that.

  • Or just buy a proper stem.

    Good idea

  • Don't need to get to sensible now!

  • sure but as it's christmas time, there isn't any activity on local forum and none of the local bike shops has any 1inch stems. But I want to ride that bike.

  • fuck man if its temporary, use some pvc tape

  • ^ do not do this.

  • ^^ Never ever.

    Coke can for temporary.

Buy some 0.3mm (12 thou.) shim stock, brass or nickel plated steel work equally well, you can cut either with stout scissors.

    Forever.
I've used that on all sorts of bars in the past and it's absolutely fine if you do it right.

  • Fuck Christmas.

yes i said it, get me my fucking spokes!

  • my orlowski crossbike is getting rdy. Ordered an enve disc cross fork from ebay too. Now just the wheels, hayes mechanic brakes and seatpost + clamp. Already got sram red yellows for cranks.
