  • ^^ Badged 'MDT' as in MDT who used to make chainrings and things I guess.

I didn't realise MDT were local.

    /csb

  • What bars are these?

Yep, apparently it was made for the owner in 2003.

  • Done a little more on the Langsett in a hungover stupor today.
Bottom bracket came out with no trouble at all, yet again showing how well the old boy looked after it. Threads are perfect, no rust in the bottom of the shell at all and the oiler nipple cleared straight away.
Nice cottered Bayliss Wiley bb, all faces cleaned up fine and no sign of pitting.
Have got new balls going in but probably could have repacked the old ones.
Cotter pins didn't look too deformed so will hopefully be able to reuse them seeing as all the new ones I've used appear to be made of cheese.

Will hopefully finish cleaning up the frame and regrease the headset, put the bb back in and polish cranks tomorrow.

  • Gaston - Do you need a Zeus seatpost binder bolt?

  • Which cogs are OK for vintage campag track hubs?

So far I have tried EAI and Phil

EAI for sure plus their campy lockring if you don't have one. The Deluxe is very good.

    Soma Highway héhé

No thank you Mat, it already have one.

  • Just won this for the Langsett. might be a copy of a TA rack - the ones I've seen have 2 horizontal bars on the bed of the rack unlike this one.
Should clean to a similar patina as the rear rack and be a perfect fit with the porteur bars and Liz's frietag handbag/barbag.

  • Still think it's a shame (#puppykilling) but to each his own AND very well executed! Also props on the DIY paintjob.

I need a DA 7600-hp btw, anyone got one laying around :)

    sick paint job

    Thanks to you both!

that's really nice, but why the supertype seatpost?

  • Just did a stupid with my brand new rear wheel.

My cog slipped on the ride to town earlier so just tried to tighten it up, the lock ring was really loose and had stripped the thread on the hub. I did a stupid and tried to fit it on the other side of the hub and it stripped the thread on that side too.

Hub is fucked, gonna have to buy a new one and get the wheel rebuilt now.

  • It is not 100% retro build.
    Jagwire cables, Mavic new rims
Miche seat post Campagnolo is 1-2 cm to short :-(

  • Might just stick a front brake on this and single straps, commuter/beater sorted.

Was debating with coaster hubs, single speed, risers or drops, but meh.

  • Just cleaned up the chainset and pedals. Pretty much all surface rust(there wasn't much) gone with a quick rub of Peek polish and tinfoil and a buff with a cloth. Only took 5mins to get them looking more than respectable.
Turns out they're Williams cranks, logos all in tact with matching 48t ring. Ring shows minimal wear and the chainring bolts are nice and snug with no hint of rounding on the heads which is nice.
Unsure whether I should t-cut(least abrasive grade) the frame. It's not crazed/heavily scratched so doesn't need it but would possibly come out nearly factory fresh if I did. So far I've just used non-abrasive turtlewax cleaning wipes which have revealed what little imperfections there are.

  • if you (or anyone else) is interested, Williams chainsets have an easy-to-use date code to help you work out the age of a bike (or how original the kit on it might be)

Not Italian, but the Japanese and Taiwanese make some pretty faithful copies of Campagnolo posts that would look much more the part than that Miche.

Cheers for that! Cranks are dated '59 and chainring '62 so fits with the bike being new in 1959 and ridden regularly through the 60's if he had a new chainring after three years(these old steel rings look like they would wear a lot slower than modern ones).

Cranks appear to be the standard c34 model.

Looking further on classic lightweights it would appear the Gran Sport mech on there is one of the earliest versions based on the cable adjuster etc. Win.

  • I relay like this supertype :-)

  • Need
    a pair of open pros.
    conti gp classics
    white benotto tape.

    maw the lawn. (sigh)

  • Gois evolution.
    Is lovely with either seatpost!

  • It's a spelling apocalypse!!

  • Now I just can't bear changing it anymore.

  • Nothing quite like going to the postbox to find half a dozen or so tiny packages.
Cables, grease, bar tape, and other dull but essential bits have arrived.
Managed to polish up one of the front hub flanges last night. The wheels are def gonna take a bit of work to get respectable looking, alloy rims will be the first upgrade next year when I can afford them.

  • Ed, post the damn bike!

BTW, check out SJS for rims if you have an unusual size.
