Thanks looking forward to getting it built up. Planning to build it up as my everyday bike so need to decide how to protect it from rain rust etc. Anyone have any top tips?
Lacquer? Clearcoat? Linseed Oil doesn't work in my (very short) experience of a rawed 853 frame.

Croix de Fer on the previous page is awesome.
Plexarice's frame has great potential too. Good time for projects!

how easy would it be to clearcoat at home?
-
• #77684
I did have a quick look, and one of the sprayers does do clear lacquer. I think doing it at home might be more trouble than its worth, and you might just end up with something dead easy to chip.

That frame deserves a decent job on lacquering. You could do it yourself but with the time and hassle involved and the risk of fucking it up and getting dirt/marks in the lacquer I'd pay the money to get it done right.

this is a real mock up and isnt really how it will be finished but i was bored and used what i had available.
one thing i am not sure on though is if i should go for a silver shiny dura ace headset or if i should go black... Chris king for example.. or open to suggestions of course!
thoughts?
it will have silver
-cranks (ring will alternate between silver and black..ish)
-post
-stem
-drop bars with black or white grips
-or risers with black or white grips.saddle will match grips!
wheelset will eventually be dark grey open pros with silver spoks n hubs.
nothing extreme colour wise here obviously but dont want to use this cheapo tange heasdset on here and want to get the right one when i do actually buy it!

Objectively, what's the best value (older/used) 9/10 speed group? I've got 7400 and 6400 stuff and some cheaper 9 speed Campy stuff, but is there a 'sweet spot' in design that's the perfect match of functionality, price and porn?
What's older Ultegra like (post 6400)? Is it worth the extra for DA from that period?
I do have a soft spot for the look and feel of campy brifters, but I like the price of old Shimano... -

It's for that Caygill Audax frame, so a 'go anywhere, but still dead nice, summer/winter bike for Yorkshire hills for when I'm not riding a fixed wheel for whatever reason'.

They do look kind of functional, don't they? I think smaller frames have a tendency to look more slack because of the wheel:steel ratio.

Black or silver.
Oh, look, it already has a silver one.Black finishing kit so the silver looks a bit odd to me

is there a 'sweet spot'
2nd tier is usually the sweet spot, all the function of the Pro group without the extremely expensive exotic materials. That means Ultegra, Force or Chorus, according to prejudice. Obviously Shimano 6600 is cheap because of the millions of OTPs sold with it on board, and it's the last Ultegra before they uglied up the groupset with that weird 2-tone thing that makes all modern Shimano anti.
