Might be right tho.

I just fitted a new BB (buddery smoov) and tried to fit a new rear derailleur.
BUT, (and there's always a fucking but with this bike) the bolt that attaches the derailleur to the hanger is too short.Well, I think it is. What happens is that I screw the bolt in to the hanger, and it gets tighter and tighter until all of a sudden it just slackens off again. I think there isn't enough thread on either the bolt or the hanger. Would trying another mech tell me which the problem is...?
Perhaps stupid question, but are you sure you have the derailleur aligned properly on the face of the hanger? There is a adjusting screw next to the bolt that controls the tension of the derailleur, and it sits onto a protrusion on the side of the hanger. If you don't align these before you locate the bolt in the hole, it won't work..

Well, cant say im very impressed with the red bike shop...
I took it in yesterday morning and asked them to index the gears/do whatever needed to make sure the shifting was spot on and to cut the steerer.
I went in on the way home as i pass it (hadnt had a call saying it was ready even tho they said it shud have been done that day) and it was sitting there 'done' but no one had told me.
So i paid my 25 quid having seen the steerer was spot on, no play in the forks, then had to push it home with my other bike,
to cut it short, the chain falls off the front when you shift up in anything higher than the 17t cog, and the rear doesn't shift properly 50% of the time either.
I know i should take it back but man i just want to ride the thing

650c-steel-suntour-command-project done. Rides nice, might change the bartape though :D

Yup. It all fits on fine, until I try to torque it up with an allen key, then it slips.
If you know what I mean, it feels like when you overtighten cheap water-bottle lids and they go back to as loose as possible, withouth ever getting tight enough. -
• #73258
Another stupid question .. But are both threads ok? I mean one isn't stripped part of the way .. you said it tightens then go's loose.
-
• #73259
Sounds like the thread could be shot, are both the bolt and the internal threads intact?
-
• #73260
I couldn't see the threads on the hanger properly and have a horrid feeling they're stripped. But I can't check till tomorrow.
Is there any other reason it'd do this? -
• #73261
Yeah I understand. I realise it was a silly question.
It sounds like something has been stripped or damaged, OR the pitches don't match (Link below describes two minutely different ones). Does the bolt thread in o.k from the other side of the hanger? Is the thread on the end of the bolt dented or damaged from dropping? If so, this can be fixed with a file.
This will probably rule some things out for you.

Why the trouble with gear adjustment? Where is your default straight chainline? It should be somewhere near the middle of the block when on the big ring.
It's something worth figuring out for yourself, in the long run. If you need a hand I wouldn't mind.

This will probably rule some things out for you regarding pitch.
I took an 8 speed chorus mech off on tuesday, then tried putting an 8 speed athena on today. The threads MUST be the same on the mounting bolts. So either I've stripped/damaged the threads today, or somthing else.

It may be that the new bolt is damaged then. I can't see how you would have stripped the dropout threads/cracked open the dropout unless you were cranking it like mad when you installed the new one.. lets hope!
-
• #73265
I never could get it tight. New threads are probably damaged then. I'll have a better look tomorrow, and then get my dad to check it out. and then go to the LBS. In that order.

What happens if you try and put the old chorus mech on? Can you swap the bolts over or are they captive?
-
• #73267
The bolts are very different. Chorus' top pivot is sprung. Athena's doesn't appear to be.
They are also about 8mm different in length. -

In other news, just installed the (I think) tester-approved Shimano UN-55 bottom bracket to the Argos and it's a peach.
-
• #73269
Very tester approved.
-
• #73270
I see. If the old mech goes back on then you can't have fucked the hanger shirley. It's probably the only tester approved thing about the build.

8mm? wow that sounds like a lot.

They are also about 8mm different in length. Are you missing a bit? If the new bolt looks 8mm longer than the old one, is it going all the way through the dropout due to the B-Pivot spring retainer being missing? That could cause it to go loose after the thread has passed through the dropout, leaving the derailleur hanging from the thin section where the B-Pivot spring retainer and circlip should be.

Ok, so. I was told it was Athena. It doesn't look like that^... shit. I'd better get some pictures.
