  • Few things i want to do to my Steamroller

Thinking of trying the Halo Fix-G hub with Aerowarrior rims, along with some full mudguards and maybe some 32c Vitorria Randonneur Hyper's as they are apparently lighter than the usual 28c wire city version, give a bit more comfort and grip to, then mostly use it to commute to work at night.

    Sound good?

  • Fuck. Is this gonna be super safe and will it ever be ridden?

  • ^^The fix-G is interesting, not used it myself, personally I'm not mad keen on splines having used the Miche carrier which always feels like there's a tiny smidge of play even with a tight chain (probably being over-sensitive though).

It may be worth considering the disc-cog solution, cogs are reversible so they last a while, and there's a huge variety of hubs at your disposal - from ready made solution based on an XT hubs from Velosolo through cheap, bomb-proof, exotic or colourful MTB hubs
Excuse the duff photo, but here's a snap of my home-spun version (DaBomb DH hub with replacement axle (nicked from a trashed surly hub)

  • Never been that keen on the mtb hub thing, always looks a bit 'bodged'

With the Fix-G i am worried about the cog having a bit of a wobble after a while and feeling like a slack chain. I'm using the Halo track hubs at the moment, also never had a problem with cogs coming loose in the past, even on cheap hubs.

only time a cog came loose was when my lbs fitted it for me, never again!

  • It was the bodge-factor that attracted me to the disc-cog tbh.
I think that by and large, lock ring alternatives are just a solution looking for a problem. (as long as you have a decent lock-ring and reasonable hub you should be ok). - I just thought I'd see what the alternatives were like just out of curiosity.

  • Maybe the fix-G is sort of solving a problem that never really needed solving, for me anyway

Halo hubs seem decent enough, with a Andel (Surly) cog and lockring, always fit them very carefully, clean and grease all threads and fit with a proper tool, i see no reason to worry. Apart from the fact i want to ride brakeless and have full mudguards, but oh well :P

  • The bolt on cogs seem like a pretty good solution to me. Lockrings clearly aren't a massive headache but I've stripped one in the past on a rather expensive hub so always feel a little wary when approaching them, whereas I don't when I'm fiddling with disk brakes.

  • Remember when i accidently spilt oil over my disc brake on my DJ bike, not fun!

Halo hub is pretty cheap n cheerful, sort of bike id fit the cog and not change it until its worn

  • ^^That was basically my thinking, I wanted a bomb proof hub that'd be maintenance- free and safe for brakeless descents on my daily commute. Kit for jump-bikes is typically over-engineered, whereas track kit tends to be a little more weight sensitive - Unless you can afford goldtec on your beater I think disc-cog is a nice compromise...

  • Thinking of using SKS Longboard mudguards, keep me fully covered.

  • I love seeing resurrections like this, great work!

  • I've got converted XT hubs on three bikes, the system shits all over threaded hubs, they're so much better if you dont need to run track ratios. If I couldnt be bothered to convert them I'd probably get these:

  • Those hubs look tasty ^

ill look into the hub conversion, might be worth the bother

  • Velosolo sell them already set up! Clicky tempting.

  • do it yourself and save the cash, it takes 10 mins and a set of cone spanners. Last time I bought one of those hubs it was £21.

Hmm, that is a cheap solution. Any tips for axle and spacers?

  • May just keep my Halo Aerotrack wheels, they are doing just fine

If it's 10mm axle, the spacers, axles & tracknuts are available from VeloSolo

  • If it's 10mm axle, the spacers, axles & tracknuts are available from VeloSolo

Indeed, was wondering if there was a cheaper axle option than £9 + shipping. Though I guess even buying those from there you'd still save £15-£20 buying your own hub and DIYing the conversion.

  • ^ Donor hub?
(I used axle and spacers from a Surly with trashed lock-thread rescued from the TFG bins by Butters!!)

  • Indeed. Or there seem to be some 10 x 175mm Weldtite cromoly ones on t'Bay for ~£6 posted, with wheel nuts.

  • ^ good scheme, but If you need custom spacers, I can do those for you.
In front of me on the desk I have a stainless pipe of OD 15mm ID 11mm purchased for this very task! - just confirm the length you require....
It won't be CNC'd anodised aluminium, but it will be rust free, cost free and fit for purpose!

  • Ha, I was wondering if my brother could make me some. ;)

I'll let you know - I don't need anything at the moment, I'm just curious.

  • Deda finishing kit.

If by finish it, you mean like at the end of a mortal kombat fight then sure.
    That stuff is grim

Umad? Deda is nice stuff. Apart from the tape, which sucks big time balls,
