  • Great minds and blah.

  • Oh and if you go for the road version you can use Éclat BMX levers

Personally, I think they are the best looking flat bar levers going. I have the polished ones ready for when I go flat bar setup on the pomp. Also gives you the option drop levers later on.

  • For my money (and presumably much less of it) the Shimano BL-R550 is nicer

  • £14.99 a pair for Shimano or £19.99 each for Éclat makes it a complete no-brainer even without the aesthetic considerations, and you get reach adjustment and SLR return springs with Shimano.

  • Can anyone 'chop these to make them lighter so they can be viewed?

Made it a little more light - it goes way too dark when I view it in the browser. Must have som color profile issues. Anyways, it's meant to be very moody - how does this look:

  • regarding disc brakes. I'd go for the mtb version with cc or tektro levers for drops and loads of options for flats/risers. I think the longer cable travel from the same lever movement is great for control and power.

  • @spotter I've used various hydraulics over the years. I'm quite happy with BB7's on anything less than a downhill/freeride bike.

    • Suddenly remembers wanting to sell old hydraulics to spotter :-(

Yeah, less than half the price of the Éclat levers but imo they look cheap. Also the Éclat levers can be serviced and come with a spare set of all bushes and washers so in theory, they have the potential to last twice as long. No brainier huh?

  • Because brake lever wear is such a huge issue, isn't it?

  • oh. and this for you chris borneo.
I'm going to use an ultra torque chainset on a pomp with a slightly modified bolt on cog mounted to an adaptor that will take the chain line inboards from 52mm to 46mm

Do me a good price and I can be tempted into hydraulics

  • Shimano deore xt, xtr or avid speed dial brake levers.

Forget the rest, buy the best.

  • ^^ Be back home on Thurs/Fri, will pm you soon after.

I've worn out cheap Shimano levers before. The Éclat levers run on quality brass bushes and I really think the overall quality and aesthetics make them worth the extra buck but each to there own.

I would be very interested in one of these. Are you going to modify a velosolo cog? How are you planning to cut it?

Just a copy of the superior (aesthetically imo) Fly

  • I've gotten in contact with someone who knows someone who will cnc mill it for me. I will modify a ss freehub sprocket as they are cheaper than velosolo and I can't use the original holes. the big problem is that I don't think i can go lower than 18t.

  • Got to be honest, I think the Éclat lever is a nicer shape. No doubt the quality of the Fly levers is second to none but at £60 a pop, ouch.

yeah, I've just looked at my 17t setup and there wouldn't be much meat on there after cutting it round the disc mount.

  • As long you use the right lever, it'll work.

SRAM for example perform crap in modulation with disc brakes whether Cane Creek SR-5 work almost like normal brakes.

Why is that? Surely the cable pull of the two levers must be pretty much identical?

Presumably that adaptor slides over the lobes on the hub, "bottom" as shown in your pic to the outside and sprocket (suitably cut away) mounted on the "top". Initially I'd have thought there was a material risk of the chain hitting the spokes, but I have 13mm from disc mounting face to the elbow of outbound spokes, you're using half that to get your chainline to 46mm so as long as you're not using a Wippermann 1G8 chain it looks OK but tight.

I get a 46.3mm chainline with a symmetrical 4mm thick ring on modified UT cranks, if you're not going to modify the cranks I think you'll find the chainline with a symmetrical 3mm thick ring is 45.8mm. UT road outer rings are dished to give a 47.3mm chainline on the outer ring.

  • Did you consider just making a steel top-hat with the disc mounting bore/bolt holes on the crown and the sprocket teeth cut on the brim? Seems like it would be less work, and you wouldn't need two sets of bolts.

  • I really think the overall quality and aesthetics make them worth the extra buck

On aesthetic grounds, I'd rather buy 3 sets of Shimano if necessary :-)

It's a moot question, because I have proper brakes on my Pompetamine

  • I've been polishing some 1985 swept back bars this weekend.

I presume they are steel? If aluminium expect eventual crack n fail.

    Seriously!?! They're painted silver!!!!

    Well la dee da :)

Top hat cog does sound like a much better solution to the chain line issue. My only worry would be all the shit that would collect in the back of it.
