I wanted a CX bike. (like everybody else at the moment apparently, why am I such a conformist?)
But I could not sell my track bike to finance it so I decided to build one with £0...
I found an old gas pipe mountain bike last week. Heavy, slack geometry, ugly, but free so I am not too picky.
Brought it home, secured the basics: could not see any cracks, the frame looks straight, stem and seatpost were a bit seized, but nothing that a paint stripper heater gun and a vice could not arrange... Good, let's the frankenCXbike project commence... I don't have 650 mountain bike wheels in my shed, and CX bikes are 700c aren't they. So I fitted an old pair of 27X1/4 wheels on it, clearances are big enough to take it, except that I can't use the cantilever bosses anymore, but I'll try to modify them or use some old mafac centre pull calipers I have somewhere... A saddle, drop handle bars, and boom, please see the atrocity below... It is going to be fun!
I know it is stupid, but I've done a beater like this before (I mean a MTB frame with 700cs), it's totally rideable, despite the weird geometry and a BB shell ending up way higher than it should be... I can't wait to finish this!

if you want to go back to the black i'll buy the gumwalls off you.
Did you sort out a wheelset in the end mate?

am i missing some sarcasm or outta the loop. wasnt this the very first colourway ever presented with the histo back in 09?
Quite possibly, I've not really given the MASH's much thought or notice till I had opportunity to buy one at half price, and as I was in and out of hospital around '09 I had no time for thinking about bikes full stop as was pretty sure I'd never ride one again at that point.
But whenever the matte black and multi-coloured Histogram (with fecking stupid geo) was displayed, it now annoys me (even more than it did before). >_<

on a scale of 1-10, how bad would it be to run this as a conversion?
11?

Hello veLLo (sorry couldn't resist!), like the idea, especially as I want a CX bike and have no funds neither.
Also interestingly, some CX bikes are using slacker geometry closer to MTBs anyway.
Also, dunno if it'll help, but have you tried good old V brakes?
They have larger vertical adjustment for pads. -
