For my imminent new road bike. I have a new pair of Look Keo Carbon Blade pedals. But now I am unsure. I will use this bike for everything from commuting, to going to the pub, to doing century rides and training rides. I have a good pair of road shoes (Bonts) that weight nothing, are stiffer than a teenager reading FHM and are as comfy as shoes can be. But I can barely walk in them. So I have bought some Time Atac XS Carbon pedals and will probably buy some lightweight, stiff mtb shoes to go with them, so that I can walk normalish at the pub/shop/etc. (Lake MX236)
My question is that will these shoes, or other good mtb shoes be just as good for long and quick rides as my Keo's? Will there be a noticable difference in stiffness? I had sidi Dominators in the past and used to get hot points above the cleat, someone which I have never had with my Bonts. I just don't know which way to go with it. -

sumo I think so long as you've got good shoes you can't go wrong with Atacs.
I slightly prefer riding in road shoes (Look Keos) because I can't feel the cleat at all (even when climbing hard). The pedal/cleat combo is also light. I'm also lucky where I live I can go out all morning without putting a foot down. For this they're great but I don't like Keo pedals around town as engaging is a bit slow and you've got to be careful putting a foot down on slippery road.
I'll probably switch to Atacs on to the road bike for this coming winter. All riding fixed I do on Atacs.

Depends on your feet, the fit of the shoes...
BMMF uses mtb shoes on his road bikes with no problems. Though of course there is a reason why there are different shoes for road and mtb.
mtb shoes will probably be heavier so more rotating mass, they tend to be less stiff as you are likely to run or walk with the shoes
is the new road bike really going to be your everyday bike - in which case mtb pedals may make most sense?

I use my road pedals (deltas) when I know I'm going on a long geary ride and won't have to walk anywhere.
Atacs the rest of the time.
Walking in road cleats is too much effort and an expensive business.
I had to run for a train in the road cleats a few weeks ago, never again.

road pedals + shoes = 710 grams
mtb pedals + shoes = 1020 grams. Not a huge difference. I'm more concerned about stiffness and hotspots though. I guess I've always got my normal Keo's to test against.
-
• #63619
stiffness and hotspots will depend on you and the shoe
it varies from person to person, but part of the reason for the large cleat interface on road shoes is to reduce the likelihood of hotspots. offroad you do not pedal as constantly as on road, so hotspots are more likely using mtb shoes for road riding

Right, I just need to sell those Keo Blades to buy the Lake shoes then.
-
• #63621
I want these but they're a bit pricey
-

If you're really worried about hotspots, get checked out at one of the Specialized BG Fit shops, they do customized in-soles for any shoe, not just their own.#
P.S. - I wants those shoes too. o_o

I have those shoes, abet in white as there wasn't back around.
Felt more like a road shoes with additional rubber.

Good idea this. Cheaper than all those exotic parts.
