From Soulcraft Bikes FAQ - "Can I pick my tubing?"
Man walks into a restaurant. Seriously. Walks into the kitchen and up to the chef and asks, “So where do you buy your meat?” Who would do that? Especially if you didn’t know your Rump Roast from a Porterhouse. Usually people choose a restaurant based on reputation and let the chef worry about the ingredients. But when it comes to bicycle frames, everyone wants to know what tubing is being used. This would make sense if customers had any knowledge about tubing beyond what they’ve read in magazines or in chat rooms, which is usually being written by someone who’s never built a frame. I always tell people to choose a builder they trust and not to worry about the tubing. Good builders know that you choose tubing based on what you’re building and for who rather than trying to use brand A over brand B. I don’t mind people asking, but before you do, ask yourself a couple things; what answer am I hoping for and why? Would there be an unacceptable answer? Do I trust Soulcraft to choose my tubing? In reality, the brand of tubing is one of the least important aspects of building a frame. I’m happy to tell you what I’ve used after I’ve built your frame, but I think it’s a subject that’s been hyped way too much and builders need to be trusted to make the choice for you.

853, obviously. There are about 60 different standard round main tubes available, if you can't pick a set of 853 tubes to suit a rider and purpose, it probably can't be done.

wicked. thanks.
I come to 'current projects' once in a while for the wisdom of mdcc_tester, hippy, smallfurry, edscoble and about 5 others tops. sorry, but the rest of the posts/reponses tend to be a waste of internets.
the chef and meat analogy above is charming, but if a steak was 800 quid a pop, I think more people would start asking questions.
a visit to BLB tomorrow should make everything clearer. according to the catalog the piovra series seem focused on columbus, so it would be a price decision between cromor and slx. but did I read somewhere that the Piovras are limited to italian threaded bb?
I'll have double check if they do models in different reynolds tubing, would hate not to follow mdcc's advice.
chrome would be nice, but pricey? -

aye but FYI the 3 soulcraft frames i've seen/ridden have been columbus tubing

The long and the short of it is.. Got hit by a black cab on Friday night coming onto old st roundabout, he got too close and my pedal clipped his front wheel, sucked me underneath, trailed along for a bit under his front wheel, leg was trapped for about 20 min, freed by the fire brigade, spent the night in casualty and walked out of the hospital with only a graze to my knee. I cant believe how lucky I am (minus the bike obv.. but rather it than my leg). The case is with the police at the minute.
