  • This comes close though

Thanks! I see from their website that Carradice has some nice stuff.

  • I do recommended the one stevo posted, stonehedge had one when we did the Cumbria ride, it was pretty well made for such a large bag, and the cotton duck fabric is quite water resistance.

  • This is awesome. Its great seeing the average joes attempt at bike building as i know not much either haha. Keep up the good work dude. Cant wait to see it finished.

    Check it out!
It is a singlespeed build from an old racing frame

hope it's going well Alex... but don't you want these levers further down?

  • And I am only 14 too ;]

  • Im 16 and your doing better than i could mate haha

  • Ghost bike for a 14yo? So sad, such a waste :'(

Also, wtf? Please say not final position.

  • I am going to get a new bike paid by insurance and a condition is that all parts will be sourced from BLB. The BLB guys practically insist that I get a custom made frame, and I might as well seeing as the insurance is paying. I'll take any advice you might have on custom frames, but the first issue is tubing and the compromise between strength and lightness.

My main concern regarding strength is that since this will be my daily ride I will leave it locked up with a d-lock in all sorts of places. It does happen that people try to shuffle around your locked bike which can make your lock dent the tubing. I've seen it happen on other people's bikes.

Apart from that I only need a 52cm frame and I am not very heavy myself so I presume that allows for fairly light tubing when it comes to actual riding.

    .

  • Have you not notice how many people ride fragile frame everyday and still managed fine?

Go for oversized tubing, 631 tubing is plenty enough.

  • And in Columbus land, seeing as I am not very heavy and presumably not very "demanding" (whatever that means) I can choose SL over Cromor?
Might be a price issue though mind you, I'll find out next week.

EDIT: They don't seem to make SL anymore, but supposedly there is plenty left in the market?

Oh, and lugged versus welded. Do I care? Should I?

    .

  • Of course not.

  • Anyway it isnt a ghost bike it just has a white paint job!
The handlebar tape will be black, the tyres, pedals, and wheels will be black too.
    Its not a ghost bike!!

    Hahahah

  • "Oh, and lugged versus welded. Do I care? Should I?"

Personal decision - and financial, unless the welded option is fillet braised, in which case "welded" might mean more dosh than lugged.

Is there a monetary limit on the insurance?

If it's an insurance job and a custom frame, then get a better tubeset.

  • S&C, all the tubing are similar to one other, just different name for different company.

Since RPM reminded me it's an insurance jobs, I'd go for something like reynolds 853/true temper S3/dedacciai EOM 16.5/columbus spirit (they're AFAIK similar tubing to each other).

In the end, as it's a custom job, surely you'd want to talk to the framebuilder and they can build the frame to fit your need? I mean surely the framebuilder will choose a tubing specifically to fit your need?

  • ^ not related to the discussion above ... but my current project is starting to become real ...

  • Very taken aback by how much lighter the Tubus steel rack is compared to the cheap light alu Tortec one I used to have;

Are BLB frame builders? Custom frame usually means you get a frame built? Get a Bob Jackson with some Royce or Goldtec hubs and some nice wheels and the other components you like. Whether I would leave that locked outside is another question.

W.T.F? More than the question of tubing choice, this part needs explanation.

    ^This.

  • Picked up this Columbus Max frame recently. Not sure how to build it up at this stage or who the builder is...

Nasty half stripped paint. Original colour looked to be a green to pearl white fade.

0751191 is stamped on the bottom bracket, sound or look familiar to anyone?

  • that half stripped paint looks boss. Lovely bike, good find.

  • I concur.. WTF, very nice.. You NZ guys never disappoint!

  • Thanks! I spent most of Friday night getting the silver off. It was a thick rattle can job so it has left the paint under it pretty good.
