Winter beater all set up. Cobled together from spare parts. Hoping the 32c rando cross tyres will be able to handle the wet/cold weather to come

That 'beater' is bloody great skelator.
I have to ask the naysayers above regarding Squabs' Cyclo Benelux gears: why the hell would you slag it off? Really Dylan I'd have expected better from you. That stuff is proper nice english vintage gears, with the coil spring and all. Good luck to you Ed! I'd like to have a go when it's built. I personally can't really be arsed with super-old bits any more having been through a short phase of being interested (built a really light road/path with airlites, that was fucking ace), but there's something very sensible about this direction that Ed's going in, on a conceptual level. I reckon a three-speed (or even two-speed, like Brompton currently sell) deraillieur system is eminently sensible and really desirable. I'd rather have that than eleven speed doubles made of bloody carbon cheese that definitely won't be functional in 60 years time. I'm with Ed (<can't believe I just wrote that last bit.)

Hi all
I've been riding a Langster SS now for two months and loving it.
I'm going to build up from scratch a second SS in the next month or so, for the moment only in a freewheel version, sorry fixed wheel is not yet for me.
As I'm fairly new to SS and the road bikes (I've been riding and still riding MTBs for the last 15 years or so), I've started a second post on my blog as it is already quite long and would take up to much room here, with my ideas of what I want to use on the new bike.
I would love suggestions, critics, corrections, ideas either here on this thread or on my blog
http://minty95.wordpress.com/2010/11/20/new-singlespeed/Here is what I have written over the last two month concerning my Langster and my thoughts on SS, all good so far.
http://minty95.wordpress.com/2010/09/15/singlespeed/Thanks to all, I love this blog it's fun, never have I come across a MTB forum like this.

Nothing fancy, it's most likely the original 70's carlton one.

Love it. Didn't Obree have a 'Righty' fork though? Does this affect things at all the track bankings?

Frankly old part work just as effective as modern part, an old Simplex LJ derailleur work effortlessly well (especially paired with a malliard 5 speeds block and TA crankset).
You shouldn't dismissed old component quite readily, there are some absolute shite, but amongst them, there are some gems that still rival modern stuff, like Mafac brakes for instance.
Thank for standing up to me Skully though.

the item I mentioned? they're worth s bit, but quite a lots of people tend not to realise just how good/reliable they are.
Hell, i've seen a Mafac brakeset going for nearly a tons, managed to get a brakeset complete with brake levers for £20 as the seller think they're as crap like a budget weinmann brakes.

ed, if you still need bits for your 60s lightweight i might be able to help you out.

Sorry i should have been more specific, i mean the Cyclo Benelux 3 speed derailleur.

Mr. C, that Barry Chick is sterling works, will let you know if I needed anything (probably 27" alu rims, just waiting for my Bayliss Wiley hubs to arrived so I can count the number of spokes).
spotter, I'm not sure, however I managed to get them cheap, like the HGS frame, they were only around for a short period of time, and it was when bicycle companies like Raleigh decided to use Sturmey Archer as their 'standard' hubs instead (even though Cyclo Benelux are sometime used with a 3 speeds internal hubs to give a 6 speeds range using two cassette).
edit - found out more information about them;
http://www.classiclightweights.co.uk/cyclo.html
Cyclo were producing an **18-gear **option involving a hub gear, 3-speed derailleur and a double chainwheel
And the downfall of Cyclo Benelux; The second disadvantage was the dominance of Raleigh as, by far, the largest bicycle manufacturer. Raleigh was not enthusiastic about derailleurs, largely because it owned the Sturmey Archer hub gear business, but also because it didn’t like the engineering. Raleigh’s reputation was built around extreme reliability and this did not fit well with the fickle pull-chain derailleurs of the 1950’s.

wish you'd leave it brakeless, but still... insane.

i bought it with the forks drilled and with brake marks on the front rim, thats why i put a brake on (and to save the old knees)
i suspect it was used as a time trial for short distance races, the "relaxed" steering tube angle would also support that.

Fixed isn't just for sprinting, you know. PNut was fourth in this year's National 12hr on the cog.

point taken, i just thought fixed setups where more common on short distance race like flat 10s, hence the comment.
