I admired people like your brother.
people always tend to buy the best equipment for this and that, but the best kind are those who make do and mend.
That Bianchi look like it could easily be a decent road bike with a few tweak and elbow grease.

He tried, but he flew into Germany about midday, and they started cycling at 5.30. In that time he replaced both tubes, both brake cables (although rear brake was broken) and tried to tinker..but he isn't that into bikes. He wants to do it again though, fair play, and I'm going next time. We're going to drive so we can take our own bikes though :p
Oh, and I think he knows what the pain cave is now.

So I trust you'll be putting a Campag grouppo on it as well then?
-
• #28657
Nice. I love Shamals, they just look so balanced.

no... :)
It'll be full dura ace with shamal wheels, personally i can live with the mixed ethnicity.
As long as it rides well thats all that matters to me, not too bothered about the elitism of the components. -
• #28659
Is that a Shimano freehub on those Shamals then ?
-
• #28660
No. I guess by 'full dura ace' i mean not full
-
• #28661
Very much a long term project but I figure I might as well as make it nice and take my time over it.
I'm thinking respray (possibly clear-coat), wound up forks, Sugino 75 cranks and black open pro wheels. I need a job.

hmm
-

i guess 'elitism' was the wrong word.
all i mean is i won't lose sleep if i mix campag and shimano -
• #28664
Shouldn't be too hard to swap the Freehub over to Shimano. Unless I'm missing something?

• #28665
Jambon, what's up with the wheels that were on it originally? Tubs?
-
• #28666
Cos they looked shweet,
-
• #28667
yeah they're mavic open 4 CD tubs. Most probably sell them
-
• #28668
That explains it. Open 4Cds are so nice, shame they aren't clinchers.

Decided to build up a road bike as i got a bit of a bargain at a car boot!
de stickered graham weigh 7005 frame, aplina carbon forks, 9 speed tiagra, 105 rear mech, tektro brakes (atm) just got to wait for a mate at the lbs to sort cables and i have some black bar tape to finish her off. -
• #28670
was that car boot murton or knavesmire? either way they have increased in quality since i went

knavesmire, it was a carrerra vanquish with a dent in the frame, just stripped the wheels and components, right of the end of the day. Cycled home with the bastard on my back! Got the pompino done at powder and paint btw and they did a very decent job, thanks for the tip!

DAWES MILK RACE
My cousin won a Milk Race sometime in the 80s and was fitted to have this hand built for him...A bit of a mess now after all these years but the frame is in perfect order...no dents just needs stripping and a good respray. Still got the original drops on it engraved by the builder..
I think it will make a nice fixed conversion project..budget of 5-600 quid..What are your guys suggestions?

Paint it baby blue.
Then sell it.
ta ra.
-
• #28674
shall i do what you do and get some deep v rims and stick a spoke card in my back wheel? looking for serious answers!
-
• #28675
I would hope you would keep the same paint/decals again. Some tasteful old cranks (Campy) and low flange hubs, open pros, polish up the bars and stems and some lairy multi colour 80s bar tape.

Continuing from my story yesterday about my brother and his adventure.
Imagine nearly 400km across the italian alps, beautiful mountain roads, blazing sunshine, with the odd snowstorm at a peak or two. Perfect. Now imagine a 14kg bag on your back. And a bike without a functioning back brake. And a faulty RD which won't shift to the two biggest cogs. And a ridiculous bar and seat angle:
He did it on that.
