The 50mm ones are awesome. The f/1.8 is the cheapest (only like £60 IIRC) then there's the f/1.4 which is higher range, faster and I think it has image stabilization. Then there's the mighty L series f/1.2 which is incredible. Very well made lens as you would expect from a Canon L series and super super fast at f/1.2.
The L lenses aren't cheap but they are by far the best lenses you can get for a Canon DSLR, or even a DSLR full stop.

my current project is, having gotten my GH2 back from Holdsworth to spread the word that paragon sliding dropout bolts are made of cheese.
I honestly haven't a clue what this means? I thought we were gonna go camping?

Just so you know, if any of your girlfriend's Canon lenses have a red ring around them, they are fully 531 awesome to the power of genuinely very good.

we're still on for that?
good- lets get organised- I'm voting Ireland.
I jsut bought a rear internal geared hub- and hopefully a rear rack...
It cost me some serious dinero (it is not a Rohloff).Basically- The GH2 has sliding dropouts, which should mean chain tensioning is a doddle.
BUT i came to try and loosen them not so long ago and the entire allen key interface gently turned smoother and smoother and I had to get Holdsworth- them being nice guys- to remove all the bolts and replace them with good new ones.It is now ready for its new incarnation-
It will have a SRAM i Motion 9 geared hub in it, with a bar end shifter (which is supposed to be a grip shift, but as I have have drops....)
and 2 disc brakes
and a rear rack
and stuff and then I'll be ready!!!!!
yay. -

So am I way off the mark suggesting that summink is actually wrong with it? I realise you can't possibly know without looking at it, but are they pretty robust usually?
Canon stock zoom lens are usually crap, but it doesn't stop people from taking photos.
prime lens is your best bet, and concentrate on taking the photos instead and don't worry about the camera.
if you like to figure out how to improve your photography, this book is an excellent start;
Hot Shots: How to Refresh Your Photos: Amazon.co.uk: Kevin Meredith: Books
it help you focus on how to take the photo and not worry about the camera equipment.

+1 Prime lenses are the best. There are a few zoom lenses I like but I'm not crazy about them.

I realise this is your favourite thing to say regarding photography, but please note that my predicament is I suspect to do with my equipment being either faulty or just utterly gash. I've used it for several years and taken some decent pictures, but now it's starting to get on my nerves.

I've been messing around with cameras this morning, as I haven't been getting anything like the quality I should from my 400d, and took the following for experimental purposes. Thought I'd post the results for the pure vanity of it:
