  • I've been building up this touring bike since my last was stolen about a year ago. Frame was a bargain from Hilary, and parts from various folk on here - thanks Wannabe, Furious Tiles - and from the Ebay. I've only put in a couple of longish rides on it so far but it rides lovely. Looking forward to some touring in France come Spring and Summertime. Hope you like.

^ Someone that seems to know so much about bikes and components and waffles all day long yet uses SRAM!? :-$

I wish they did those in XL. I'd love one for a runaround (at £500 F&F they're cheap enough!)

I find the hood shape comfortable, and I like the doubletap shifting. It also allows be to be neutral when the Shimano vs Campagnolo wars flare up, which would be reason enough on its own to rock/ride/run SRAM

  • Just been using a Canon 28-135mm (f3.5-5.6) for these, that my Da uses with his 40d.

From almost the word go I've been disappointed with my 400d + kit lense... it rarely ever gives a sharp image no matter how much twiddling I do. I suspected it might be because something somewhere was misaligned perhaps. The above photos are a lot sharper. Maybe it's time to invest in some new 'glass' (just to wind Mr. Smyth up).

I'm a total novice and my technique is complete trial and error, so maybe I should work on that too.

the most versatile good lens you can get with the most bang for your buck is the Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS. It's an excellent lens which can be wide open through the zoom. the IS is excellent and saves you 2 stops at least.

also read this and look more into the subject if you're interested.

    Hah, you tart!

  • I think her favourite ones are a long and stripy Canon EF 70-200mm and a Canon EF 50mm.

both of those will not serve you well at all. way too long range. even the 50 is close to a real 70 when put on your camera because of the crop factor. you wouldn't even be able to photograph a bike without standing 15 feet away.

seriously the 17-55 is the lens you want.
