  • almost there!

  • About to start building my first proper(ish) road bike and just wondering about buying a groupset...

...trying to keep costs down to start. I saw a few new cheaper groupsets like this Veloce one for £330 . Would I be better off with a new lower end or should I keep searching for a higher groupset second hand?

The newer 2009 groupset is pretty cheap here:
    http://www.merlincycles.co.uk/campagnolo-and-shimano-groupsets/2009-campagnolo-veloce-groupset.html

If the Campag functionality suits you, then the veloce groupset is a good chioce value wise. It has all the main campag features including skeleton brakes, external BB. The picture shows older than 2009 levers though. The 2009 veloce groupset should come with the new campag lever shape, which is well worth getting.

  • who me?

of course you, you demonic hipster...

  • 09 Fuji Track

Need to get some double straps/pedals, new tires etc.

  • it's a nice sit-up-and-beg bike.

  • it's a nice sit-up-and-beg bike.

What do you mean by that?

  • @JordanD - love the avatar ;)
bike looks good too, except i wouldn't ride mine in the snow...
or do you have another bike to ride in summertime? :)

  • What do you mean by that?

"I know your bike better than you"

  • SE Draft Lite 2009. Just finished putting on the new bars. The frame and rest of the stock parts will slowly be fazed out whenceupon I gain enough dorra.
(Yes I know slack chain, fixed.)

  • "I know your bike better than you"

..or not. Hardly sit up and beg is it, there is a saddle to bar drop for a start.

  • it was a tongue in cheek on the saddle/bar height appear parallel to each other.

Cheers, dont normally ride in the snow haha but excitement got the better of me after i put the new wheelset and bars on :)

Plus skidding in the snow is ridiculous fun!

  • I've started a new project (by new I mean 30 years old!) which has equally awkard problems. It's a Raleigh Record so it has 26tpi bb threads. Other than the cranks being slightly off axle (it's not the bb, I checked that first) there isn't a lot wrong with it. It would have been nice if the original wheels were 700c not 27 x 1 1/4 but that could be easily resolved should I wish to put some real money into it.
One of the things I love about these bikes is how little you have to spend on them. I bought the bike for £40 of the bay and I've taken the whole thing apart and re-greased it all. Apart from buying things like new levers, and other aesthetic items, all it really needed was a new chain!

Here it is as I bought it.

I've tidied it up a fair bit but I still have a lot that I'd like to do to get it to the standard I would like. I'm planning on touching up the paint work where it's slightly damaged and then paint the lugs/welds and put some pin striping and hand painted logos on.

    love it!

Fair play had drops on before so...

This was the first time i rode it with risers on, only went for a quick pootle seemed comfortable though(t)

  • it was a tongue in cheek on the saddle/bar height appear parallel to each other.

sorry, didn't get it. Maybe because the saddle/bar height doesn't appear parallel :-)

  • I'm sure this has been done before, but I'm so pleased with the result that I wanted to put a little picture... I swapped bars / stem on my bike and had no bar tape to put on, the old bits I had kept in my mess were the wrong colour, so I cut two stripes in a old inner tube and wrapped it with the inside fascia out... Looks nice I thought for free tape... blah blah... recycling...

    Loic

  • Gimp bars, sweaty?

  • Hehe!

I use gloves at the moment... will see in few months...

    L

  • I did the gimp bars thing a while back, but on risers, when i had no tape. To be honest i found them super uncomfy and they arent very hardy, so changed em pretty quick...

  • I tried that once, good idea on using glove otherwise your hand ***will ***stink of inner tube.

  • is it weird that i like the smell of innertube on my hands? reminds me of my dad when i was a nipper...

  • is it weird that i like the smell of innertube on my hands? reminds me of my dad when i was a nipper...

    yes, it is very weird

  • I'm sure this has been done before,

Yep, I did it when I had no bar tape and was riding to sutton every day for a while in the pissing rain a few years ago. It does start moving after a while.

But you have the wrong way, you started from the stem... is that OK because its rubber?

  • Finally got this conversion together, got frame on the 'Bay for a decent price but sort of blew the budget on the build. Frame has decent length drop outs so had a good choice of gear ratios but went for 48x17.

Thanks to the valuable Transmission Database thread for my chainline, it might be a mil out but it's good enough for me.

Sorry I don't know how to embed the pics in the post - it's probably ridiculously simple but then so am I.
