it has campagnolo cups and a zeus spindle, dura ace track cranks, if i break that i will go for bmx cranks
Cool, I trust they'll be ok but I mean old fluted style cranks wouldn't be my first choice for this kind of bicycle.
isn't it a bit of a shame to use a nice old set of DA cranks / for polo + tricks?
I've got some good condition messenger cranks i'd be happy to swap / part ex...

That's really lovely ASM. I hang my head in shame with regard to my previous comments about Planet X.

Working on this at the moment and it's not a pre for sale build I am going to keep it I need a group set for it so if anyone has anything including sti for 9 speed that would be great.

I know some of us feel the need to name certain appendages, but do try to keep it to yourself eh?

About to start building my first proper(ish) road bike and just wondering about buying a groupset...
...trying to keep costs down to start. I saw a few new cheaper groupsets like this Veloce one for £330 . Would I be better off with a new lower end or should I keep searching for a higher groupset second hand?

Cheers, I love it, I'm just off out on it now!
I slated the Planet X brand based on my limited knowledge of their formative years when (I thought) they ripped off popular MTB components.

If you're planning on putting a bike together yourself, you should ALWAYS factor in the cost of tools as well. Obviously, if you have no tools this doesn't really matter too much, but if you have tools for shimano components then it will cost you a lot more than you originally thought to put together a bike with campagnolo.
the veloce groupset is good, you see it on £1,800 full carbon road bikes like the Wilier Mortirolo (overpriced yes, but people buy them).
I have no experience putting campag stuff together, so i don't know if it's easier or harder in relation to shimano. Bare in mind that shimano, sram and campag all use different shifting systems, so it would be wise to test ride bikes with a variety of groupsets before making your choice.
The new veloce groupset uses the ergo moulding on the levers (which has been migrated down the range over the past couple of years from super record), which looks pretty nice.
Hope this helps

@ äsm: cheer for the tips.
I hadn't really thought about tools... I've got a few bits and bobs, but didn't really think I'd need *specialist *tools for anything other than the BB (which I have)... is this woefully naive?.. rear cassett maybe?
Will def try before I commit to buy new... altho most of the new shimano stuff is ugly as sin.

You will need a special tool to fit the BB cups (new veloce uses an external bb), and possibly a tool to fit the cranks too (but I'm not sure about that). You'll definitely need a tool to fit the sprockets onto the back wheel, and you may need a special chain breaker too. Also worth investing in a decent set of cable cutters - its very easy to fuck up inner/outer cables without one.
Can't think of anything else right now..

The Campagnolo chainbreaker is only for 11speed. Veloce is currently 10 speed. I used a standard Park chain tool and a KMC quick link

Only looks about a 62cm, if that.
it looks bigger as it is!

Only thing I'd be careful of are the cranks and whatever bottom bracket spindle you have in there. Otherside it looks like a really tough bike.
...and the hubs.

I've started a new project (by new I mean 30 years old!) which has equally awkard problems. It's a Raleigh Record so it has 26tpi bb threads. Other than the cranks being slightly off axle (it's not the bb, I checked that first) there isn't a lot wrong with it. It would have been nice if the original wheels were 700c not 27 x 1 1/4 but that could be easily resolved should I wish to put some real money into it.
One of the things I love about these bikes is how little you have to spend on them. I bought the bike for £40 of the bay and I've taken the whole thing apart and re-greased it all. Apart from buying things like new levers, and other aesthetic items, all it really needed was a new chain! Here it is as I bought it.
I've tidied it up a fair bit but I still have a lot that I'd like to do to get it to the standard I would like. I'm planning on touching up the paint work where it's slightly damaged and then paint the lugs/welds and put some pin striping and hand painted logos on.
