I'm looking at buying my first geared road bike. Does anyone have any experience with the Giant Defy 2 Disc or the Cannondale Synapse Disc? Both have mechanical discs and a tiagra groupset, the Giant is a bit cheaper at £600 rather than £680 The idea of discs is appealing because it'll get used every day, whatever the weather, will I actually notice any improvement in braking in the wet over rim brakes? Also, is tiagra any good? Any other suggestions around the same price mark or general tips for choosing a road bike to use every day all year round?

Any recommendations on where to get some carbon forks painted?
edit: for a reasonable price / cheaper than Cole (£150 min charge) and NQ (£90)

90 pounds actually isn't that expensive and James delivers top work imo.

I'll do them for £80 (plus shipping).
They'll look shit though, as they won't be prepared properly and I'll rush the job.
But quality clearly isn't a priority.

Yes and yes.

Speaking of brakes the single pivot Ofmega on the Rondinella is more of a speed modulation device than a braking device- what can I replace it with that would look of a part with the rest of the bike, but doesn't suck balls in functional terms?

Try modern pads, the stock ones were probably OK in 1980 but if they are that old they will have hardened considerably.

I'll have to have a look at what I can get, can I just use modern brake shoes in there?

Yes, the slot width hasn't changed.

Carbon wheels and mudguards somehow look so cool to me. Strong flap game as well!

Campag Monoplanar look great.
But I think they might also be teabaggers in terms of quality.

Thanks! Yeah there's something about it with the mudguards eh?
I think carbon smp copy and slightly lower front end are the next things to do, although I tend to clonk my knees on the bars when climbing with it any lower, so will have to fit 130mm stem...

Freezing cold weekend, I spent far too much of it staring at 853 road and audax frames on the Rourke website and elsewhere. Getting myself a bit too worked up I stepped away from the computer and did some work on the fucking 853 audax bike sat in the other bloody room.
Now with 28c tyres and I reckon 32s will clear too so may try those out soon. Already noticeably nicer over cobbles.
Big fat proper light on the front, an Ixon IQ Premium. Seems alright. Pedestrians certainly react very differently to you at night which is a good thing.
Shimano A600 pedals (And RT82 shoes).
Specialized saddle copy that I'm still trying to find an adequate fit for both riding with padded shorts and while commuting - so far comfy for one but not the other.
So still a little work on fit, final saddle position and then the reach. Already dropped the stem one spacer as I've had the bike set up very conservatively until now but may be a few other minor tweaks, probably slightly lower still.
Stupidly put the nuts & bolts for the mudguards somewhere-i-don't-know-where so they'll have to wait a bit longer (only been two years so far I've had them sat around).
Wife still has no words for how ugly the bike is, just this weird face she pulls.
Probably, I have some knobby tyres to throw at it.
It's not very much a functional bike, just a fun one to pootle around Surrey in.
