  • I don't do Holga though, it's just the same 'different' on every frame. Sue me, I like content.

    Nonsense ^^

    I agree with GA2G

Some of the most beautiful photos that I can think of were taken with Holgas.
Some of the worst I know, were shot on Leica M's, with the envy-making Noctilux.

Mr.Smyth is right on the money, as is Ed.

I prefer the Holga by far. The creativity surpasses the equipment, easily.

  • For me the Holga thing is similar to the Unicrap thing...

the difference between the Holga and the Unipack is that the Holga isn't trying to be anything special, it was a cheap camera.

it's just a lightbox that allow you to expose the negative, abet limited.

  • it's just a lightbox that allow you to expose the negative

do you wanna say that one more time Ed, i dont think you have made everyone aware of this yet.

  • it's not a lightbox it's a dark box painted with black anti-reflective paint inside.

if it's just a box to expose film in why does everyone wank over them all the time? admit it. they are fetish objects that pander to your ego. objects with intrinsic qualities that make you a more interesting person.

  • Its all the fault of the money grabbing Lomography people.

  • Lomo / diana / holga

Nothing wrong with them for what they are, but why elevate them above anything but a cheap very very basic camera. The fact we're even talking about them says it all.

Hipster Slave Cams the lot of them

We have different definitions of cheap, as those are not cheap.

  • Holgas are dirt cheap.

  • We have different definitions of cheap, as those are not cheap.

Exactly! Because THE WORLD IS FUCKED! They should be.

    Fair point well made Ed.
My Unipack example sucks a bit.

Holgas have been used in war zones and to follow presidential races to great effect absolutely. They can produce interesting and cool images and cost (relatively) FA true.
But I have students making stunning work with punctured biscuit tins and 50p Box Brownie's from eBay that make £20ish seem like quite a lot.

The images posted above prove, brilliantly, that it's not the camera it's the operator.
The Noctilux image is particularly rank:-0

If used in a series, the fogging/flaring etc can start to appear samey as the imperfections, so beloved of the users, appear in the same or similar place in the frame. That's what I meant by 'the same different' not that they aren't capable of making great pictures.

The original point I was making was that £200+ for a Holga darkroom course smacked of a "I saw you coming" sales pitch based around a fashionable logo.
The basic elements of the darkroom are simple and the Holga is simple so I'm struggling to see how you make a 5 week course out of what should take a day to do.

    Cheers

  • And,

Ed, shit news about your beautiful bikes, will defo keep an eye out south.

  • do not reply on this topic here.
back to your film grain, underexposed muddy negatives, blown highlights and compressed shadows.
    as you were.

Have found a photography course in greenwich at the old Naval college and that is the cult of the Holga camera (info about the Holga http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holga) its a five week course on saturday starting in June. The course costs £205 but that does include teaching of developing black and white photographs and film.

Perfect post to follow up MrSmyth's. :)

Look for a Canon ae-1 Program on ebay, you can usually get a kit for around £20-£40 if you look hard enough. I've had one for a couple of years now:

    Seems to do the trick

    [EDIT > > > > Ed the Ed of Ed beat me to it . . .]

  • Do you know where I might be able to pick one up for cheap? I've had a search on the bay, either £50 for a hunk of rust or £20 in a good condition to pick up only from outside of London

The wife has an Olympus (OM10) I think, she never uses it so was going to ebay it. Dunno what they are worth but would be pleased without the ebay hassle..

  • I have a Canon EOS 500N with a standard Canon Optics 35-80mm lens- 35mm SLR camera.
GC and cleaned- the only issue is occasional noise from the Auto Focus Motor- but its rare.
    No scratches anywhere on lenses.
Also comes with a Starblitz 3601DTZ Flash fully adjustable in excellent condition- Multi-dedicated can work on Canon, Yashica, Olympus, Nikon and Minolta. Works perfectly together.
Will come with 2 sets of appropriate batteries and 5 Kodak Ultramax 35mm film (36 exp 400 color).
And a hand strap and a nifty carrying case which fits the camera and flash...
    £60 if anyone wants it?
