  • Hey Tim - what camera/lens you using? And those 'urban' shots....you using a tripod? Lovely photos.

    Bronica SQ-A 80mm

  • Yeah Angus, it's Stockwell. Old pic that!
Wools - Sam's right, Bronny SQ-A. A lot of the urban one's are a 40mm rectilinear lens, no tripod.

  • They're nice.

  • highly doubt it'd work, especially with the F/stop.

  • apparently it's been done with that lens, but it isnt very sharp.

  • the sharpness is down to the F/stop, to put it in presceptive, a large format equation of a 50mm F/1.4 lens (35mm), is actually 188mm at F/5.3, (using 5x4 as a reference).

an 86mm lens on a large format 5x4 would be equal to a 23mm with an F/stop of give or take, 0.1 on a 35mm camera, and at F/0.1ish, there's no surprise why it's not very sharp.

The lens would be idea on medium format, since that'd give you an 35mm equation of 44mm F/0.6, it's still a useless f-stop since it'd be very diffcuilt to manual focus (unless it's a rangefinder), an example would be this photo taken with a 50mm F/1.0 lens, very fast but not exactly idea for everyday photography unless you're a narrow depth of field junkie.

some more and will be putting the rest up when on my usual computer.

  • damn for that price its tempting - would just need to bodge an aperature mech and shutter onto it somehow... Ultra fast ultra wide on 4x5 :)

Yeah, I understand that, but I'm a big fan of superfast primes on large backs. The plan would be to make an adjustable aperture ring. The reason it's not so sharp is mainly down to the plastic elements on the inside, I think.

    Very Nice.

  • apparently it's been done with that lens, but it isnt very sharp.

well seeing as it's for projecting a tv image it's resolving power will be nowhere near that of any photographic sensor of any size film or digital.

  • which is why it would make sense to stick it on the largest possible format it will cover - as the larger the format the less resolving power is needed.

  • but it will be nowhere near the line pairs per mm for any photographic format.
it doesn't make sense to stick it on anything apart from a sony back projection TV

  • just came across this thread. great to see some people actually taking well constructed photos rather that the shit that any old cunt who thinks they are a photographer takes with the nikon d40 they got for their birthday whilst splerting 'looky at this great depth of field!' fuck off

    fixed.

I fucking hate that word, oh and calling lenses 'glass'.

  • Bokeh is a fucking horendous word

  • I used to, not for a long time now though. I don't film skating much anymore plus I'm sick to the back teeth of kids thinking VX1000's are the dogs bollocks.

I agree there is such absurd hype and weirdness that has its root in SP e.g. (OMG DONT PLAY BACK FOTAGE EVR IT WIL KIL UR CAM/ONLY EVER SHOOT AT F5.6 OR U WIL DIE)

However out of all the cameras i have used to film skateboarding i still prefer my VX1MK1 & 2KMK1, i have never been much of a fan of the DVX series . Whatever your opinion you gotta admit they are a good bit of kit, just so many mongs own them and have no clue.

  • will all you photographers who haunt this thread please go and look at this one.
some of you will not be bothered by the recent posts but most of you should be.

do not reply on this topic here.
back to your film grain, underexposed muddy negatives, blown highlights and compressed shadows.
    as you were.

  • Have found a photography course in greenwich at the old Naval college and that is the cult of the Holga camera (info about the Holga http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holga) its a five week course on saturday starting in June. The course costs £205 but that does include teaching of developing black and white photographs and film.

  • If you just wanna learn how to dev and print your B/W film I'll show you how at Goldsmiths college for a 4 pack...
I don't do Holga though, it's just the same 'different' on every frame. Sue me, I like content.

That is a very kind offer to teach people. Its just a course nothing to do with me just at one of the drinks there was a long discussion about Holgas. But looking they aren't cheap.

  • For me the Holga thing is similar to the Unicrap thing... It's a label that some people use to make money off enthusiastic beginners. I like that Holgas get people into photography but developing your own film is something I can teach you in about 20-30 mins. B/W printing in an hour or so, the rest is practise. Holgas are great because they're really simple so you don't have to make any decisions and can just enjoy picture making. Making a £200+ 5 week course out of it smacks of opportunism to me. If people here would really like to learn how to dev their own B/W film I'd be happy to try and work out a session in my darkrooms at college.

Photography is easy, being good at it is hard...

  • the old man just bought me a Halina A1 as a present for staying with him when he was in hospital.

Im rather stoked, Its in great condition. Just need some 120 film now..
