  • Little curve adjustements (though there's not a lot to gain) and turning / perspective transforming in PS.

  • Leon Levinstein

  • Dunno how much you can expect from a low / mid range scanner either? Not clued up about PlusTeks but from what I've read they're not on par with a Minolta or Nikon scanner

If you have the negative, and if it is exposed and developed properly in the first place,
make a nice big print of it, and scan this using a flatbed scanner if avaiable.
BW film does not really like to be scanned, it likes to be enlarged on paper.

And IMHO the major issue about that picture is that it's sloping.

Little curve adjustements (though there's not a lot to gain) and turning / perspective transforming in PS.

The PlusTek was bought some years ago on a whim - I wouldn't expect it to compare favourably with something costing perhaps ten times the price, but it's what I have.

The failings of this particular negative are probably representative of where I was in the late 70s - I have some that are better, many that are worse, and a greater number still that have disappeared through house and career moves. Reading books helped, or at least prompted me to be more careful - I think I have improved since then...

I'll try working from a print (CanonScan LiDE20 - again, what I already have) but not immediately: there's an autocycle to re-assemble and significant cleaning (dust from anglegrinder and paint overspray) before I get the enlarger out.

Perspective correction, rotation, greater subtlety with control curves - thanks for pointing me in the right direction - I'll keep trying.

  • Enough talk people, have a photo.
    Mamiya RB67, Provia 400x.

Not happy with the scans so I'm trying to see if I can do some myself somewhere. . .

  • Nice! Love reflections like that

  • Bonus pie and chips portrait.

  • Last one, I promise:

  • Nice, how you metering slides at night?

  • With difficulty. Take a bunch of meter readings (reflected and incident) and a bit off guesswork. Another shot didn't really come out properly at all but having a lit subject helps.

  • Scanned from 10x8 print

    Canon FTb HP5 Microphen

    Better?

  • First roll with my first rangefinder. Really happy with all the ones that came out.

There's a few others on my flickr if anyone's interested

  • Great photos Stu :)

  • First one is really nice

  • does anyone have an Olympus XA they'd like to sell? I'd like to give the rangefinder version a try

  • Is it worth me taking my camera for a CLA? It's an old canonet ql17. There's nothing noticeable wrong with it, but then I'm not that knowledgeable about cameras.

Also - I'm taking so many pictures with wonky horizon lines that spoil the photo. Did anyone else have this when they first started taking pictures?

  • Also - I'm taking so many pictures with wonky horizon lines that spoil the photo. Did anyone else have this when they first started taking pictures?

If I have the time I use the top or bottom frame lines in the viewfinder to line up the horizon, then frame, then double check again that the distance between horizon and frame line is the same on right and left hand side

  • what's a CLA btw?

  • clean lube and adjust (another name for a service basically)

  • kboy that sounds like good advice. I'll make sure I check. So frustrating the amount of otherwise OK pictures I've ruined!

I normally say service, I'm not sure why I wrote CLA. I think it's a bit of an Americanism and a result of too much googling photography forums.

  • You could just straighten them up in photoshop

  • Yeah I probably will end up doing that, but feel like I'm cheating a little bit. (Also they weren't amazing photos to begin with).

  • Can straighten stuff in the darkroom, sod what people think

  • Also it's not the end of the world with a slightly off horizon, especially if it's a 'moment' photo

  • ...pictures with wonky horizon lines that spoil the photo. Did anyone else have this when they first started taking pictures?

    Yes.

I find a tripod helps (pocket one in pocket, full size one in the car) and straightening / cropping at the enlarging stage. Recently started using PhotoPaint as well...

Many favourable reviews of Canonet ql17s - compares with Leica M6 etc. - if it works fine I'd be cautious about letting someone else fiddle with it.

  • Do you mean when printing? (I've never developed/printing my own stuff, but it's a target for this year).
