  • yeah its allowed. Infact actively encouraged in this thread I think :)

Speaking of which, anyone want any darkroom stuff for not a lot? I've got a pile of trays, a few decent tanks I could do with getting rid and a few boards (10x8 sort of size and below), prob 2x lamps, an englarger (LPL6700), erm and other 'misc' stuff.
CBA'd ebaying it, and know there are a few wanting to get into home dev

Yea, I thought this thread was about pictures -
turns out it's mostly people selling away their equipment!

    : ]

  • If we're doing this I have a Nikon FM and a 50mm 1.8, the ai-s version on Ebay at the minute.

I'd be up for dev tanks to develop b/w in if you have such?

  • There's occasionally good work up on We Are Wild, such as this

Other stuff is very hit and miss though

I would also take a dev tank off your hands if you have a couple.

+1 I'd take a dev tank and a couple film loaders/spools (whatever the white things that you put the film on are) - stupidly gave mine away a while ago.

  • Met this dude the other day. Nice stuff:

Good to know I've got the thumbs up, cheers. I've dropped to £150 on the camera, I need the cash and sadly don't need the camera! If anyone wants to come and have a look at it, or ask any further questions then get in touch. The FM2 is a beauty, but I'm sure what with this being a photography thread you're all probably already aware of that...

  • Will sort out darkroom stuff after the weekend. Not entirely sure myself whats lurking around :S

  • I have a couple of tanks and reels lurking in the back of a cupboard too, haven't used for years and years, keep 'em just in case. could go to a better home though...

  • Just developed some Kodak 200 colour stuff in xtol, negs are all over the place. Anybody done similar?

  • Friend is looking for her first proper film camera before going off to uni to do photography. She already has a digital slr and a Diana but she's after a second film camera.

What do people reckon for a first "proper" film camera? Not looking to spend crazy £50-£200 depending on what it is.

Was thinking it would be good to have something with a decent degree of control but I'm not sure what to recommend. A decent rangefinder? Basic SLR? Something with nice high contrast glass would be a bonus.

What did everyone here start with?

  • Decent old Nikons/leica's etc command a premium still so maybe look at slightly less obvious alternatives:

Olympus OM1 with 50 1.4 and maybe a 28 or 35mm, well made, compact pro level SLR is often touted as being a great choice.

I had a Contax RTS with Zeiss 50 1.4 - beautifully make and with an amazing viewfinder and ridiculously sharp lens.

Like this: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Contax-RTS-contax-carl-zeiss-50mm-f1-4-planar-/290697844889?pt=UK_Film_Cameras&hash=item43aef11899#ht_500wt_1359 could be a bargain if it stays below £150

  • If you're talking interchangeable lens rangefinder then the low end of that budget would buy something like a Zorki or Fed. High end of it won't go near anything like a Voigtlander or the horrible L word or anything with any automation.

I'd probably recommend an SLR, unless you really want/need a rangefinder then you get much more for your money with SLRs.

If it's a Nikon DSLR she has then probably stick with Nikon for potential lens compatibilty and similarity of controls etc. Otherwise, Olympus or Pentax or even something less common like Konica. Maybe avoid Canon as they all seem to develop 'the cough'.

My first proper camera was a Nikon F75, really light. Last generation of consumer 35mm SLR cameras so does pretty much everything an F6 does but it's made of plastic.

  • Have a chat with the guys at a aperature. Great selection. And now they have film processing/printing lab on rathbone place.

  • Pretty expensive for somebody just about to start uni. Yeah you'll get a bit of a guarantee but they are built like bricks anyway.

I would get a Pentax K1000 or something, lenses are a lot cheaper than Nikon counterparts.

    • 1

AND budget for an incident light meter. That is more instructive than the camera itself. Just my own silly opinion of course.

  • Olympus OM1 with 50 1.4 and maybe a 28 or 35mm, well made, compact pro level SLR is often touted as being a great choice.

I learned on an OM1 and still shoot on it. Love it.

Part of me reckons a rangefinder is good because they're a bit smaller and it's just a bit different to an SLR - digital or not. Covering more bases with different cameras, more selection for different situations.

    Hmmmm.

  • Also, something with a built in light meter would be good I reckon. Zorkis are great but I think the faff of having to use a separate meter would be an issue.

Something simple enough to just go out and shoot on and learn with - I guess that's why I figured a rangefinder might be good.

  • Sorry, yet another question for today.
My XA won't fire the flash unless I drop the aperture to 2.8 (ie, one down from the flash setting). The flash fires like this but it then exposes the shot as if I wasn't using the flash. Any ideas/solutions?

I've shot a roll or two like this that I need to get developed but I can't imagine the results will be great.

  • OM1 and I'll second the incident meter. Westons go for peanuts these days and can still be repaired.

  • nefarious, a handheld incident meter does slow you down, but goddam, do you really and truly learn about exposure. Also, its never wrong. Interpretation of what type of exposure you want, comes with trial and error. Error in the amount of depth of field for example, or if one is going for a high key exposure, then you will also have learned (by then) what is the right exposure to go for, and not the exact exposure per se.

    Hope you see my point.

By the way, I don't know of any relective meter system, handheld, or in-camera, that can be as accurate as a good incident meter.

    EDIT:
Oh yes, my favourite camera is the OM1-n. And my favourite lens was my Elicar 90mm f2.5.

    That was some time ago.

    wipes tear from eye

You including hand held spot meters in that?

One of those would swallow the entire budget plus some though.

  • You including hand held spot meters in that?

    Yes, I am.

And I have used spot-meters to great advantage, as they are derigeur at distance. But incident still wins.
