  • Pretty expensive for somebody just about to start uni.

That is what student loans are for....

  • Yes, I am.

And I have used spot-meters to great advantage, as they are derigeur at distance. But incident still wins.

Fair enough. When using an unmetered camera I prefer a spot meter but that's only personal preference. Think it might have been you that turned me onto them and the zone system infact.

  • Does anyone want a Nikon EM?

    (no lens included)

You can have it for just the price of the postage

  • Right-o, everyone seems to be pretty keen on meters. I understand the difference between incident and reflected light meters but I'm not 100% on spot meters (they also seems fucking expensive). Anything to know/recommend?

  • Very generous Spotter.

  • well they only seem to go for £30 on ebay so its hardly worth the hassle, plus it might be a nice first camera for someone. Its got the original case and strap too

    DAT REP.
    Repped, etc.

Yes, they're all expensive. The flash-syncable ones cost even more than the original non-flash versions.

Anything that has a reading of 5 degrees or less is fine for relatively close work, but a 1 degree model is necessary for longer distances, or finer readings.

Has anyone taken this yet? If not, I"ll ppg you the postage tonight.

I think to really benefit from a spot meter you want to have a bit of knowledge about the zone system. The Zone VI Workshop and Adams' The Negative will tell you pretty much all you need to know (to start with anyway) and once you start placing the important part of the image on the zone you want and checking the other parts will be within the range you wish you'll wonder how you ever manged before.

  • So you're basically using the meter to get the right reading for a specific part of the image/subject and then checking other elements are within the exposure latitude of the film?

nope not yet, PM your address and i'll get off to you asap.

    PMed.

  • Excellent stuff, I have more stuff I need to shift if anyone is interested in some free pentax stuff?

  • hell yeaaah

    Briefly, yes.

You'll pick up either of those books I mentioned on Abe or Amazon for a couple of quid and even if you don't use a spot meter they are worth a read.

  • I have a SMC Pentax-A f1.7 50mm lens

    and a Pentax AF200Sa Flash

both seem fine but i have no means of testing them

again, free to anyone who P&P

  • Also does anyone shoot 6x4? I have a film holder which I'm not going to use if anyone wants it?

  • 6x4?

Not 5x4? If it was an error, my twin still shoots 5x4, and in fact just had an exhibition of some of his work, in Hamilton, Ontario. If it is/was 5x4, I'd be happy to take it off your hands, and send it to my doppelganger.

  • Sorry Yes i did mean 5x4. IF you're still interested send me a PM

  • I'll take the Pentax stuff jack! Pming you now

  • There we are then, everything has been accounted for. If anything comes back up for grabs I'll let you all know, and I'll be having a bit of a clean out at some point so i might have some more stuff up for grabs.

  • After all the faff of trying to work out what camera my mate should get, she found a Petri 7s she'd bought from a charity shop years ago. All seems to be working as well, shutter firing, light meter seems accurate and rangefinder fine.

Anyone used/shot on one of these?

  • Does anyone know anywhere that does cheap developing/neg scanning in central London. Want to use my cameras more (especially as I've lost the charger for my digi slr!?) and have a load of film to use but had to get some films developed for the first time since I moved to London last week and got batty raped by Snappy Snaps.
    Cheers.
