  • You didn't already have one before they were cool?

  • no I like to pay inflated prices

  • Yeah - this is exactly what I am trying to avoid. Gear acquisition. Which is why I want to find the camera that is perfect for me. The problem I have with the Pentax is whilst it’s all manual (fine), the shutter dial is stiff as fuck. I can’t turn it easily. It’s difficult to shoot stuff if it’s time critical. The K1000 I had was better in this respect. The Nikon was much better in this respect.

@platypus everything I’ve read about that camera says it’s inflated price is due to its rarity rather than the quality of it - any truth in that?

  • Yeah, I think most of what’s written about lenses is bollocks. Put two A4 prints in front of someone, one taken with a Leica lens, one taken with a Nikon/Canon/Olympus etc and I doubt anyone could tell which one was which.

I can only think that most of the snobbery that’s written about lenses comes from the days when cheap cameras where cheap with plastic lenses.

@JB as Tina says, just decide what focal length you like (id guess it’s going be 28, 35 or 50) and buy the lenses you can afford. Nikon don’t really make a duff lens in those focal lengths, you just end up paying extra for rarity/ wider apertures.

Have you got your Zuiko 40mm f2 yet?

  • Pretty crazy story from last night involving my new Fuji GA645Zi. So last night I headed over to my mum's for the night and as I was getting off the train at Hampstead Heath Overground I got my camera ready to ask the fruit and veg man I speak too for a portrait.

I notice that there's some blue flashing police lights from across the road, and some sort of commotion, so I head over there instead as the blue lights were reflecting really nicely off a wall. It seems as though some guy covered in blood is in the process of being detained and he is sitting on a coffee shop chair looking very delirious as a police officer is in the process of giving him his rights.

So I take take a shot with the flash enabled, and as I do I notice out the bottom corer of the viewfinder my Teal Raleigh Shopper bicycle that got stolen last March from outside my Mums house is there propped up against a bike rack, unlocked. I'm guessing It was being ridden by the man being arrested. So now I've been reunited with my bike, and hopefully have a decent shot with all of this story involved.

  • Gear gear gear (sorry where is the hipster photo gear thread ?)

  • wow what a story.

  • Unreal! Can't wait to see the shot!

  • Oooh nice ! Have thought about getting one of those for a while.
You're going to have found that in a French charity shop for 50c aren't you ?

  • You’re a crime fighting superhero and the GA645Zi is your cape camera.

  • Mamiya Six

These seem really interesting. Does this model have the mask to shoot 6 x 4.5 ?

Do post some results when you have some.

  • Thanks all! Ye I hope it comes out nice, will post here obviously when I get it developed

  • Bike's picked up a fair amount of rust on all the shiny bits. Still got the 'Corbyn Eats Morley's' sticker I made on the top tube though

  • Tina there is a Mamiya 7 on ffordes body only for £799

    https://ffordes.com/product/18110512430081

  • @Ste_S ahah yes of course.

@miro_o That's my third. I didn't try it but I have some images from previous. Very sharp and easy to handle camera but lugs are missing, that is the only fault. I don't have the 4,5x6 mask because I won't use it.

  • I'm after a bit of advice, having offered nothing whatsoever to the thread previously!

I'm trying to find a suitable camera (35mm) for my wife. I've got a Zeiss Ikon Contaflex Super B, which is lovely, but heavy and is not the speediest to take photos with. She's been using my Trip quite a bit, which is great for carrying around (the best camera is the one you have on you etc) and she's managed to get some pretty great shots out of it. She'd like something a little bit more capable, but that is still relatively compact and quick to shoot with. Any ideas? (Ideally something around £100-200ish)

  • ha - one way of telling you clearly haven't owned one!
om3ti is a very very good camera.
om4ti is also very very good (maybe better?), and a load cheaper.

  • Olympus XA ? Should be able to get one of those in budget with the flash and case. Olympus Mju II if you're lucky ?
Otherwise Nikon L35AF. Hipster tax starts inflating prices for compacts after that

Alternatively, you should be able to get a compact SLR with lens such as Olympus OM series, Nikon FE/FM, Pentax ME Super etc in that budget also

Edit - Also Olympus 35 RC/RD/SP series, pretty much a more advanced Trip
