  • Velocio why some people have the status under the name and some people don't?

  • Velocio why some people have the status under the name and some people don't?

    Please give an example.

The only place where text appears under names that I know of is the very first post in a thread in the Classifieds forum. And in that case it's to help guide you, the reader, in knowing whether you feel you have the basis of trust to carry out a transaction (it just gives you more info upon which to base such a judgement).

  • ok, now everything made sense..... I saw the light!!!!

  • Yes, googleapis.com needs to be allowed. If parts of the pages don't work because you've blocked things, then it's your own goddamn fault and I shall be laughing at you and not helping.

But ... but ... I didn't use to have to allow it. It's all new and changing and I'm confused. And I don't like big, evil corporations.

  • I change things subtly.

Yesterday I changed a @import to a . Really subtle... but it makes the pages feel like they've loaded faster.

I only put in here the things I think you'll notice.

I changed the serving of jquery javascript to google servers as it's extremely likely that another site you've visited uses jquery too and also points to them... it means that when you come here you avoid having to make a 50K download.

Better than that though, even if you do need to download the file your browser will see that it's on a different domain and will start to grab it... browsers are usually constrained to only fetching x number of items from any one domain at a time... so by serving the javascript from the google domain I can trigger a parallel download from google which is also going to be faster than getting it from us.

So it's a win-win.... you either have the file already or you get the file faster than I could give it to you.

The ONLY downside is for the https users as now every page has mixed content rather than just the thread pages that contain external images. Which is an annoyance if you haven't yet turned off the nag message in IE and are forced to use IE because you're at work. That's the only downside to grabbing the javascript from Google.

  • VB in another matter, did you get my PM?

  • Yeah. I was trying to work out where the store would be if not my flat (West), and how much space would be required.

It will probably take a about 3 weeks to turn them around once we have the designs, so the issue isn't needing to be solved today. I figure I can worry about it more when I get back to the UK.

Might still take you up on it, but just need to think about how it works. Which isn't a priority today.

Btw... I know I'm replying to myself and everything but... whilst this has made a dramatic difference to the speed that the page renders in your browser, it appears to have had the side effect of making the WYSIWYG input areas unstyled.

Really weird, but I think that the advantage of incredibly faster page loading outweighs pretty input boxes.

I'll look at it later anyway, but if you've noticed the grey input boxes, this is why.

  • took the typed letters right out of my fingers, thanks VB keep up the great work one day you may run this joint and the world will be a better place (smiley face if you think it needs it)

  • Can we have a new nursery restriction - no links allowed?
Might help the current spam situation...

  • ^ There's spam all over the gaff!

Clarer and wxwsh are a coupla I've found. Not sure if there are any more.

  • Makes you wish that we still had gravatars, to inflict the humilitation on them to have ... a gravatar. Mmwwwaaahhhaaahhaahhhaaaaaa.

  • Can we have a new nursery restriction - no links allowed?
Might help the current spam situation...

Actually, we can do that. But it's a bit simple. I've enabled Akismet checking of the first X posts by a new user as well as banned the IP range of the spammers from the last few days and identified a common trait across them and set up something to ban all future users that have that trait.

  • 'hfhf' has just spammed all over everywhere with links, perhaps simple would be effective?

  • Nope, taken care of. Simple is inconvenient, unfortunately complex and efficient is hard to test without having a spammer handy. Thankfully I can depend on them to give me a test scenario most nights.

I do manage to stop all of the automated stuff (a few hundred attacks a day according to mod_security logs). The problem with this one is that it's a person... labour is cheap it seems. Still, there is a pattern and I've adjusted the detection again.

  • Can't com you but would if I could. :)

  • oh vb loving the quick find tourneys on the polo forum

could we have the polo today thread on there also so you can tell from just Categories where the polo is at?

    Erm... sure.

Just thinking of how... let me think.

Basically... can it be done in a search? If so... sure.

  • What exactly is the status of 'discussions' now?

I'm subscribed to the 'Stolen Bike London' discussion (which, oddly enough, shows up in my UserCP as having been created by VelocityBoy', not Velocio) and an LFGSS book club discussion. I remember that there was a bit of toing and froing at the time between threads and discussions for the book club, and I think threads won out, but what are discussions used for now? Are they a superfluous feature or worth keeping?

  • What are discussions?

  • Something that shows up in my UserCP. When I click on 'View all subscribed discussions', I get this:

    • Discussions.jpg
  • Ah, discussions belong to social groups.

They're still valid, providing the social group is active.

I think the book club one is invalid though, as the group now has a forum for which you should be using a thread subscription.

  • Yes, I'm subscribed to the threads. No-one seems to be using the discussions feature in any of the social groups I'm in. People talk about the things they want to talk about in threads. I suppose this means that some social groups are inactive in the way in which they exist on the forum, but not in the real world, of course.

  • I've adjusted what defines "Currently active". It used to be 15 minutes, it's now 7 minutes.

So the "Who's online" will now only show people who have been active in the last 7 minutes.

In theory, this keeps the session table smaller, which should help make things fractionally faster... a really small fraction.
